As many of you know, for the past several years I’ve been involved with planting community food forests at churches, libraries, and schools. There has been a lot of demand for fruit and nut trees (and other useful plants) and my friends and I have been propagating like crazy. I work as a part of a non profit called Mason County Climate Justice, though we do work beyond the county proper.

As fall and winter approach, I am finding myself in ever growing need for seeds and (in fall/winter) dormant cuttings.

I can’t afford to pay for shipping and I understand if folks aren’t able to do this, but I am looking for donations of all kinds of trees and cuttings this propagation season, so long as they will do fairly well in zone 8 Pacific Northwest. I have been gathering seed locally and will continue to do so but we have exhausted our local sources and labor.

Some examples of what we are looking for:

Apple seeds
Pear seeds
Chestnuts
Walnuts
Hazelnuts
Fig cuttings
Elderberry cuttings
Grape cuttings

What kinds of Hazelnut cuttings are you looking for? Just the blight immune stuff?

Can you share more about the work you are doing? Could you send me a PM and let me know where you are? I'm probably not too far from you and even go out to the peninsula a couple times a year and could bring some things or meet you halfway. I have two grapes and a fig that need pruning this winter and would be happy to share.  In the future I will hopefully have even more varieties of figs and grapes from cuttings I got this year.

I'll also send a pm, but I wanted to describe some of it publicly--

We (Mason County Climate Justice) are propagating plants to plant in community, public food forests that we plant at all manner of public places (libraries, schools, community centers, places of worship). We also give out plants to the public to plant at home or wherever is suitable for them. We've exhausted this year's supply and are maxed out on locally available propagation materials, and we're always looking to diversify anyway.

I don't think you want apple seeds as chances are you will end up with bitter fruit, apples are always grafted to insure quality apples. I will be trying to grow some white mulberry cuttings soon, if they do well, we could talk about those if you wanted them, I think they do OK in zone 8.

The apple seedlings would be used as standard rootstock, or planted for wildlife, cider, vinegar, and livestock feed.

Mulberry would be great! They tend to do well here
