In this latest update from Wheaton Labs, we dive deep into the culmination of our thrilling summer events! From the enlightening Permaculture Design Course to the hands-on Permaculture Technology Jamboree, and not forgetting the transformative SKIP (Skills to Inherit Property) program, it's been a season of growth, learning, and community. Join Paul as he embarks on a reflective walkabout, giving us a closer look at some of the experimental projects undertaken at the Labs.

Introducing the third iteration of our log picnic table, crafted exclusively with roundwood joinery. The unique design ensures no external attachments, relying solely on the strength and precision of the joinery itself. The foundation employs a lap joint, seamlessly complemented by a saddle notch for added stability. Clever design elements have been incorporated, with parts of the logs cut to prevent rolling, ensuring user safety and comfort. This picnic table not only guarantees easy accessibility but also offers ample seating. While it's designed to comfortably seat ten, there's potential to accommodate even more, especially on the inside of the table. However, it's worth noting that while additional seating is possible, ingress and egress could become slightly challenging. This fusion of art and function promises a rustic yet sophisticated outdoor sitting.

No fasteners. No metal. No glue. The logs are heavy enough to hold themselves in place. I thought about using wood pegs, but in the end, this seems like it will hold together really well as is.

Since it is 12 feet long, you don't get the teeter-totter effect when sitting on the end when nobody else is sitting.

Made from a tree that was dropped to make a road. Using the logs within a few days, so still quite green.

One coat of linseed oil.

Listen to Alister, the main instructor on this project explain why it was designed with the saddle joint in the orientation that it was.

He puts the "turd" in "saturday". Speaking of which, have you smelled this tiny ad?
