Hi,
Can anyone tell me how the "Best This Year" section gets selected? Its not that big of a deal, but I had a post in the Regional / New England that has more posts, more views, and more apples than most on the "Best of This Year in New England" list, but it is way down in the list. If it was based on stats, I would have thought it would be nearer the top. Maybe it is more of a staff-selected process?

Just wondering, Thank you in advance.

Do you mean this one? https://permies.com/t/214113/Maine-Permies-Meetup

I can see what you mean...I don't know the answer but will see what I can find out.

Magic and maths.

We don't get to know the details,  but I suspect activity,  quality of posts (aka chaff makes it less likely to get on), and positive feedback like likes and especially PIE have a massive influence.

I've adjusted one thing that may make a difference (not sure when the system is likely to update things). I would also suggest trying to include a post with an image - that will likely then show up with the thread either on the top list or at least on the New England forum. Maybe a cup of tea, a smiley face - whatever you think suits the thread.

I am not positive that this will get your topic into the "Best of the Year":

Pie on first post

This means that the more pies you have, the more likely that your thread will appear in the ‘best this year’ or ‘best ever’ section (‘best’ algorithm) of the home page. This will get you thousands of views daily.

Good to know. I kind of wish I had thought to take a picture with everyone at the restaurant to put on there, but I didn't think of it until it was too late.

@Ann,
Thanks for that link. I've been on here for a while, and did not realize some of those things it talks about.

Sometimes a site gets so big that the machine starts to hallucinate. Many human and bot interactions go into determining a thread's "best of" ranking -- cascades of inter-connected influences.

Haha :) I figured probably that it was complicated.
