I have recently discovered that I can dictate my Permies posts into MS Word, then copy and paste. This saves me a lot of time. It is easier to revise what has been spoken rather than typed, as well.

I sometimes use a "stream of consciousness" method for rough drafts and then I edit and refine afterwards. This gets me past a block -- I just barf it out and get the flow going. But I'm a 60 wpm typist. I can't imagine being slowed down to the rate of speech.

I'm curious, does this also work when you're offline? My spidey sense asks if tangentially intersects with the activity and training of some AI thingy-wingy-bot.

I'm certainly seeing impressive and freaky accurate transcripts from Teams meetings with a client. I prefer to hide in the memory of the participants, who know what I meant rather than what I said. Human context within a team, not a court transcript.

Blather aside, I'm glad you find it a helpful tool.

All I have to say to that is, "!!!"

I'm always connected to the internet on this PC, so I assume that it's "internet-only". I had not considered that they would be using my voice in training computers to replicate human communication--if so, it's back to typing, for me!

I should qualify that my ~60 wpm is the projectile vomiting of words, not the production of considered, quality content.

I misread the title of this thread as "composting" Does this say something about me?

60 wpm? I really should learn how to type.
Staff note (John F Dean) :

Don’t feel bad.  I gave it the same read.

If I'm not making a big and detailed post, I might do it on my phone where it does pretty good voice recognition. But there's always some stuff to clean up. I think it's only worth it because I don't have a real keyboard there.

Christopher, you obviously know a great deal more about this stuff than I.

I'm curious about the voice transcription. Is this done "in the device" or "in the cloud?" How much privacy can be expected? What controls does an individual have to ensure their "contribution" is not being used for other "hopefully anonymized" purposes?

Yeah I know, this sounds like paranoia, but I think it's worth casting a skeptical eye.

I didn’t know the answer to any of those questions, but I almost don’t care. I was assuming it was a cloud service, but I just tried it in airplane mode and it still worked, so I guess it’s happening on the device, which is neat. But like, do you know that your every text and email isn’t being duplicated and routed to some other service? How would one even check that?

It's just like a fortune cookie, but instead of a cookie, it's pie. And we'll call it ... tiny ad:
