Hey hey, I'm going to need to insulate a 14x32 shed to use as a workshop, could I cut up and use styrofoam coolers? I have an excess of them and they're thick enough. Would it sweat or anything weird? The winters here are pretty mild except for a week or two where it gets below zero, but I will need the insulation.
Thoughts?

I don’t see anything wrong with putting the recycled styrofoam to use.  Be sure to have a vapor barrier. …it sounds like there will be numerous seams.

As I recall, regular styrofoam is pretty flammable. It will burn independently.

I can't confirm this directly, but a guy I know in the insulation biz says commercial foam insulation sheets will melt but won't sustain fire by itself. Additives or something in the formula perhaps?

Maybe try granulating your styrofoam using a woodchipper/leaf shredder, then adding it to a foamed cement aircrete as a lightweight aggregate substitute.

Yup, this is the big problem. Do NOT insulate with styrofoam until you have a sure way to make it non-flammable. See also my thread about recycling styrofoam: https://permies.com/t/235495/Poke-holes-styrofoam-recycling-business

I coulda been a contender. I coulda been somebody. Instead, I'm a tiny ad.
