Several years ago my husband bought me a freestanding swing.  My entire family enjoyed it. I used to love laying on it under our giant walnut tree.  A couple years ago the material ripped. I bought a replacement that didn't last a year.  I was going to make one, but never got around to it.  Then my son suggested I use hardwire cloth.  I don't know if it will work, but I thought why not give it a try.
The hardwire cloth I have is on the light side.  I decided to wire it on, and added Paracord to give it extra strength.  So far it feels sturdy. I hope it last longer than the material.  I had everything I used, so it didn't cost me anything. It took a good amount of time to complete.  It's so nice having our swing back.

I expect the previous seat material degraded in the sunshine, so you should find that the metal cloth will last much longer. It must have take a while to stitch all that metal cloth on, but I think you'll be happy you did it. Some nice cushions and you're all set.

I hope you are right because it took a lot more time than I thought it would.  We have the original cushions. They are a bit faded, but still in good shape. We remove the cushions, or cover them with a tarp. Otherwise they get bird poop on them.  The swing came with a top, but we love to look up into the walnut tree in the day, and at the stars at night, so we never put the top on.
The material I bought to fix it is outdoor fabric. Maybe some day I will make covers for the cushions. I always have more projects than time.
We are already enjoying our swing.

That's great you have your ability to swing back!  As someone who's natural inclination is to rocking and swinging, I love swings and ocking chairs, because they give me a socially viable excuse to rock!
