Sometime ago I was asked by a member here "if I even had any permaculture hobbies". I was stunned and taken aback because I could not answer. I now think I may just have an answer. Today while cleaning my backyard of fallen leaves, I stopped to pick up some bark from a White Oak as my supply on my potting table in the basement was running low. You see for many years I placed bark in the bottom of my flower pots and containers to cover the drainage holes and thus slow the soil from being washed out. As so often it happens the light of understanding was there before me. All these years I have been building mini - hugels!!!
So I'll let you folks decide if I have a true permie hobby or not. What do you think???
I think so. Generally speaking, the best we can do is the best we can do - even if it's on a very small level. Your mini-hugel-hobby is very permie, in my opinion. I know very few non-permies who would even think to use bark & leaves in their pots.

I guess that any bark or wood scrap would work in the bottom of a pot. I like to use White Oak bark, as that was the bark I was taught to use from my biodynamic preparation training. Prep #505 if anyone wants to read more about DIY. Just remember Steiner gave his lectures in the early 1900's. Some of the materials used in those days might squick one out today!
