Fave questions are a tough one for me. I can't pick just one song, hard as I try. I love music! SO MUCH music has happened in my lifetime (I'm 49), and I've been exposed to a lot that was popular years before my time.

Love Blind Melon, Shannon Hoon's death was tragic and untimely. I've always liked their song Rain & both dh & I like the song about the Ford Galaxy. (Dh used to drive one, back in the day.) I guess the best way I can (sorta) answer your question is by mentioning what I'm currently listening to now.

Everything by "Flight of the Conchords" would be on my iPod, if I had one (can't stand earbuds though.)
Ladies of the World, Friends, The Most Beautiful Girl in the Room, are just a few of my faves. Been listening Tchaikovsky's "Nutcracker", lately. Yep, it's overplayed at this time of year, but I still love it.

Otherwise, I'd have to name fave performers/groups. Just too hard to pick one song. Todd Rundgren, Neal Young, Bruce Springsteen, Radiohead, The Doors, Sting/Police, Frank Sinatra, Pink Floyd, Black Sabbath, Alice Cooper, U2, King Crimson. Obviously, I'm an audiophile and I could easily add a bunch more names to this list! Now to view your youtube vid. I'm not familiar with this one.

i don't like thing in my ears either. heres what i did.

get an i pod/mp3 player , a Fm Transmitter , and a cheap am fm radio. then you can carry your tunes 30 feet away and not worry about earpuds or dropping ipod in mud puddle. i have done that before hope that helps

Charles, I got to rig up an mp3 player in my 79' Tbird. It has a am/fm/casette deck, all original. When I got the car, of course I had to see if the cassette deck still worked & I stuck in a tape. Of course it jammed and I had to practically dig it out. The mechanism that switches the input from radio to tape stuck on tape, so now I got no tunes in my cruise mobile. Hence the need of a mp3 & small speakers.

One of my favorites is "The Green Room" by Wayne Gratz:  http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QUVGQg2_Hhw (ignore the video, this is the only place I could find the song).

It is from this album: http://www.amazon.com/Narada-Collection-Childhood-Remembered-Musical/dp/B000005P4W

The birdsong takes me back to summer evenings at a woodland pond near my home as a child.

That is pretty music! I like quiet piano music. Very relaxing. Like Clair de Lune or Fur Elise. Has the same effect on me anyways. Thanks for posting it.

Hey Charles,

This might be a bit mild for you, but I think this is such a permie song. Help Somebody by Susan Werner.

From an agnostic gospel singer.  Really! If you like folk or bluegrass, you'll like her tunes. I also really like Our Father.

The links above are full songs from NPR's media player. There's also www.susanwerner.com with sample songs and even ringtones!

Enjoy and I hope more people share!

Hayseed Dixie looks like a fun group; but They Might be Giants are awesome & we love them! Somewhere I have a copy of "Birdhouse in your Soul" on cassette. I think it's really appropriate that they've gone on to do kid friendly music as well.

When dh discovered this little number, he listened to it every day for weeks. Still loves it!

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=m3Kgj6EiZtw

I listen to a lot different kinds of music. Up until recently, had pretty much avoided rap. Then I discovered Flight of the Conchords. Their "rap" I can dig. I know I've mentioned them before.

My husband has written & recorded music/lyrics himself. I don't have anything that he's done in a post-able form. He'd probably kill me if I did post something. He doesn't fancy himself to be much of a singer (he is really self critical!).

About the only kind of music I don't care much for is mainstream country. Nothing gets me outta the Dollar Store (or any store!) when they have that stuff blaring on the radio! However, I do have respect for some older country music/performers, but it's nothing I seek out. Dh has less tolerance for it than I do, but he works in construction and has it shoved down his throat every day. We are both big fans of western swing styled music though. Absolutely love "Riders in the Sky" (on myspace, they have nothing on youtube, also have a website) http://www.myspace.com/ridersinthesky

and "Asleep at the Wheel". http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=r9KVuLRRnUI

Ray Benson IS Asleep at the Wheel. He is a fantastic performer with a great voice. We've seen him/them and Riders in the Sky live. They are top notch entertainment!

If you like slide guitar, a friend of ours is a pioneer of the double slide method of playing.
His name is Brian Cober, he's from Toronto. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bAkcpALueZM
He's mentioned in this wikipedia article, near the bottom. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Slide_guitar

Lazy Bones
by Leon Redbone

(Melody:)
Lazy bones, sleepin' in the sun,
How you 'spect to get your day's work done?
You'll never get your day's work done sleepin' in the noon day sun.

Lazy bones, sleepin' in the shade,
How you 'spect to get your cornmeal made?
You'll never get your cornmeal made sleepin' in the evening shade.

(Bridge:)
When taters need sprayin', I bet you keep prayin'
The bugs fall off the vine;
And when you go fishin' I bet you keep wishin'
That the fish won't grab at your line.

Lazy bones, loafin' through the day,
How you 'spect to make a dime that way?
You'll never make a dime that way. Never heard a word I say.

Like so many others, I could not limit it to one, but the first three that come to mind are:H

A Gentleman's Excuse Me by Fish
Sugar Mice by Marillion
The Trees by Rush..

I am sure that if I sat here thinking about it the list would exponentially grow..

We'd fight if you came up and said, "What is the best song ever?" and I said Sarah McLachlan - In The Arms of The Angel
and you said, "No, it's blah blah blah..."  http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jVbkz_3lO3c

You might get to pass unscathed if you said, Desperado or Comfortably Numb - Something by Bob Seger, Pink Floyd,

I love Pink Floyd, Bob Marley, Allman Bros. Grateful Dead and many more of the goodies that everyone knows. But here is one that few know His name is William Whitmore and he is from montrose Iowa. He is young but sings like an 60 year old farmer from 100 years ago. His songs remind me of home (he grew up about 30 miles from where I did)  and good friends and loving family.
Seriously check him out.  http://youtu.be/DG3Oln7sgjU
Also Mason Jennings is awesome. http://youtu.be/6DTiJHnF8tY
And then there is Old Crow Medicine Show http://youtu.be/1gX1EP6mG-E and http://youtu.be/33lfmCgxdAw

Here are some of my all time favorite guitarits and the biggest influences on my musicianship:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JfchN7G-oQk

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wyWhpFN9o38&feature=related

This one covers about all of the electric guitar bases and it one of my all time favorite pieces.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MHAcg158VZs&feature=related

One more from Steve:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SxiKtzAki_I&feature=results_main&playnext=1&list=PL915CA3C992BE3D34

You probably can tell that I am very guitar oriented.  I played professionally in my youth and had a lot of fun entertaining people.  These 3 are by far my most favorite guitarists especially Carlton and Lukather.  Steve plays Larry's "stuff" with a lot more "edge."

Some how I seem to have missed that one. Amazing how many great guitarists there are out there I have never heard of. I don't think I have a favourite ... I play... not at this level... I decided I wanted to be able to buy a house when I was young and noticed that a lot of the people I played with who were batter than ... and much older, were still renting. I chose electronics instead. Not sure it was the best choice in the long run... But I am happy playing once a week and carrying mail the rest (spent 25 or so years with the electronics thing).

Anyway, how about this one:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DmkfINavhEg&feature=related

There is an official video for this one but the sound quality is not as good as this I think. There is also an acoustic version at his website for download.

Nice slide playing.  Have you listened to Derek Trucks?  I never was much into playing slide so I suck at it.  My playing is what I laughingly refer to as "eclectic improvisation."  I played professionally until I was 36 or 37.  Can't remember exactly because I did not abruptly quit but I did want to have children and a touring musician cannot "be there" as a parent so I gave it up.
I am not sure about your friends that were still renting but can understand how easily money slips away when you are a rock'n'roll performer.  I made a very good living at times and other times I had a day job also.  Some times the day job kept from touring because of the financial gains but other times the road took me away from my "day job" for the same reason.  Passing up making over a thousand a week is not something I could justify so there are some employers from my past that did not get very much notice before I left including the post office.  I was working for them just before my very first touring gig when I was about 20 years old.
I have owned a few houses in my life that wound up belonging to my ex's.  All in all I don't regret my choice to build a career in music though.  My education never suffered.  I have a double major degree (EE/IT) but finished up my requirements after I retired from touring. Getting any degree was accidental too because I only ever enrolled in courses that interested me. LOL  Along the way I learned enough trade skills to always keep a roof over my head and got to farm too so to quote from the Grateful Dead's biographical song..... what a long strange trip it's been.
