Hello There!

Greetings from Switzerland (central Europe)! I've been lurking on this website for a couple of weeks now and decided to start 'getting serious' and create an account (i did it!).
I will be posting a second topic in the building forums shortly after. This second topic will be about my dreams for my future (regarding building my own house). For you to be able to somewhat get into my skin i will be explaining my situation a bit more in detail here so that the other topic can focus on the meat of things.

I'm currently 24 years old and a studying electrical engineering. As i have a ton of interests and am a somewhat decent allrounder, if i may say so myself, i'm an open minded dreamer. I really like the vibe of DIYing and have been crafting some bits and bobs here and there. For example i have painted a mural on my wardrobe, built a loom to do some card weaving, designed and built some furniture and i've also developed a tube pre amplifier for my turntable. The results have sometimes exceeded my expectations but most of the time it's 'just nice' to have accomplished another project.
Now as my brother mentioned this forum to me my eyes lit up and i've been spending some time lurking, leading up to the present where i'm writing this post. I won't go into any specifics regarding my dreams for the future in this thread but i will provide some backstory to it. Feel free to read my second post, i will make sure to add the link to it once it exists. In short: i really like the idea of building a more efficient home and rather using common sense instead of common practice.

The backstory:
My current housing situation is that i'm sharing an appartement in a city with my lovely partner. We're super lucky to have found one right where we want to be located, have no sound issues (!!!) and it's just cozy in general - at least as much as it's possible with an appartement in a city... But still, we are accustomed to a life with the usual 'modern luxuries'. So when i mentioned the topic of building a home myself it instantly brought up some absolutely valid questions. What aspects of those 'modern luxuries' would we have to reduce? As she is not so interested in the topic i was met with a lot of scepticism and i had to admit that i'm not so well informed. So the hot and steamy dream right off the press in my head was squashed under the heel and i started scratching my head for a realistic and plausible way to get what we both want. This is how most of the restraints came to be.

As i was surfing the world wide web (or is it rather 'serving'? Like.. hopping from one server to the next.. i digress..) and read about all the topics that caught my attention it occured to me that one way traffic is the wrong way to go about it! That's why i'm going to start the second topic so that there can be a dialogue. I hope to open a dialogue where for now i will be profiting off of the experience of all the permies out there willing to spare me some time. On the other hand i will be sure to share as much as i can if i ever were able to follow through with my dream and actually buy some land and start building!

Thanks for reading so far, i hope it isn't too long winded...
I will be adding the link to the second topic riiiight here: https://permies.com/t/273971/dreams-plans-modern-wofati-building

Cheers!
Florian

Welcome to Permies!

I really appreciate all the folks who help me flesh out ideas before I put them into action at my home. It took me a little while to get good at utilizing the search function but there are great nuggets of wisdom throughout the site.

I hope to see you in future threads!

Hi Florian, Welcome to Permies!
While you are cruising Permies and looking at cool stuff, stop by the Rocket Mass heater forum.
We have just the stoves for those cold Swiss nights.

Willkommen, bainvegni, bienvenu, and benvenuto Florien!

I'm a talker, too, so I enjoyed your long post.  The way I reckon, the more you get to know someone, the better you're able to help them.

It sounds like you're here early enough to do some research, and get some advice, so I'm sure you'll make good choices when the time comes!  Since I'm in the same situation you are, I'm looking forward to reading your posts.

Thank you all for the heart-warming greetings! And thank you for the first pieces of advice

As i just spent the last hours typing in my second post, making sure to proof read it (i'm not speaking english natively) and going through my idea several times to finally post it... i did have to notice having such long browser sessions can be a problem (and closing the laptop in between to eat dinner). As i've now effectively deleted my work and cursed internally to never write a post again in such a way, i will rewrite it in another program and post it afterwards... i'm glad that i'm on vacation right now... oh boy..

Cheers
Florian
