I was amused by a survey by Trinity College London on 'British politisms'; those phrases we use to "soften requests, avoid conflict, and navigate social interactions". I don't know whether these will translate to US, but it might be fun to do an apple poll!

Years ago while on a layover in Merry Ole, I had the TV on in my room to catch the news.  A report came up about the meeting of fans in the streets after a football match, here in the US it would have been called a riot!!  The announcer termed it "a frank exchange of views" I've made use of that term many times over the years.
