We're networking for the land.  It would be so cool to have more Nature lovers move here to protect her.  As usual, towns are always looking for industries to move in.  We were fortunate enough to be guided to an unincorporated town of which there are plenty in WV, up a forested holler with a pure creek & spring water.  There are lots of parcels in the boonies with creeks, herbs galore and wild plants & deer to eat.

There are no motels around here but we do have a place where you could park your trailer or pitch a tent while looking for your perfect homestead.

Thanks for the information. Where do you find listings for those lots that are up for sale? I live in PA now but not too far from WV. Worked there for two years. Great area. I'm familiar with Martinsburg, Romney, paw paw areas.

Welcome to the forum!

One of my ancestors founded West Virginia.

I have never been there though I bet it is beautiful...

There are probably more permies than you or them realize.

Do what you can with what you have and hope others will do the same.

Hi Rad & Deanne:  Thanks for replying.  You can get in touch with my buddy to see what's available -

Tell him Liane sent you to see if there's anything in my neck of the woods - Walton in mid-Roane County.  He actually sold my place years ago but the deal fell through thank God.  Not enough to do around here for the younin's.  I'm a happy hermit working with Mother Nature

It would be so awesome if somebody who knows cows would move in around here.  You can do cow share programs in WV.  I'm nuts about raw milk  Also, West Virginia has one of the best cottage food laws in the country - the law exempts home cooks from government regulation, including permits, inspections, or prohibitions except for pickles.  Weird, huh/
Property taxes are low.  I get extra low since I'm a senior with the Homestead Act.  Homeowners insurance is cheap as well as motor vehicle insurance & registration fees.

I've been looking into an electric co-op since AEP went around putting Smart Meters on people's houses without permission.  Fortunately, I knew what they were doing & opted out.  I lived in a town in Washington that had an electric co-op and the rates were a lot lower, we never had power outages 35 mi. from the Canadian border with lots of snow and we knew our linemen, local guys.

Another project - the "powers that were" were talking about putting in a sewer system which would be an enormous waste of money for such a spread out rural community plus all they know is pollution - so I sent them info on the Arcata Marsh in California where I lived.  You can check it out on youtube.  It is so beautiful - a bird refuge & town park that recycles the town's waste water in an amazing way.  They fought a long & hard battle but finally won, created their dream and are now world famous.

We usually have plenty of rain to fill the aquifers but last year we had a little drought & my garden didn't do very well.
Some parcels of land still have free gas.  Fortunately, the oil & gas companies moved out of our area years ago but you can get gas to your dwelling in a lot of places that you pay for.
I live in a hemlock forest - they are so magical - when we have high winds, they protect us and they are also fire resistant.

When Manchin was governor, he wanted to change our motto from Wild & Wonderful to "Open for Business" - yikes.  People flipped out and it never happened  There are lots of cool environmental groups around the state.

Let me know if there is anything else I can share.

Liane,
I have a stupid question. How does Garlic grow in WV?  I live in Maine and am dying (almost) to get out of here. Politics here are failing. I have a lucrative seed garlic business and just wondered if it was possible to move the business down there. Seems winters would be shorter, labor available, and growing seasons longer. I grow hard neck garlic. Thanks.

Hi Liane!
Is the Homestead Act you referred to a state or federal act? And does the Homestead Act protect military veterans in any similar way to seniors? Thank you and I look forward to hearing from you.
Regards,
Mark Steagall

We just sold our house in NH and bought a little under five acres and a house in New Martinsville, WV.

I've been doing Urban permaculture for about 10 years with some side jobs in rural areas. Now it's my turn to work with a piece of land and build a Sepp style farm up here in the hills/mountains.

I'm looking to network with other Permies from the state.

Brace yourself while corporate america tries to sell us its things. Some day they will chill and use tiny ads.
