I was thinking about how I could use a willow feeder system to clean up the lake that is downstream of me. Lacamas Lake is in a sad state. The state and local governments have been studying it for years. They list the top
pollution sources here, I believe in order:
Fertilizers from lawns and farms
Pet waste left outside
Animal waste from farms
Failing septic systems
Soaps and detergents
I don't use fertilizers. And my septic system has a clean bill of health. (By the way, Clark County currently gives grants for inspections and repairs of septic systems in the County. More information at
Poop Smart). I've got a pretty good system for the farm animal poop. But dog poop is just bagged and sent to the landfill. What if I were to build a system for capturing that resource?
One could just set up a garbage can with a supply of sawdust next to it. But that doesn't have any ventilation. The answer might be to just build a full-fledged willow feeder and dump poop in it. Or maybe have the chamber for the can with an adirondack shelter above it, open on one side. What say you, designers?
