What's happening! Wanna find out which types of cardboard or newspapers are suitable for weed block and not ink as much into the soil. Had difficulty keeping the weeds at bay when I tried to lay down cardboards or newspapers to prevent weeds from growing back. Please shoot me back if y'all need me. Take care!

My main rule is to avoid overly shiny paper. I know that usually just means it's clay coated, but you can't be sure that it isn't plastic. The other thing I try to do as get all the tape off. I don't worry as much about ink, because it's almost all organic nowadays.

I would not put any paper products on my soil.   They are made of glue and industrial waste.
If you want to grow organic food, I would find organic mulch to cover your weeds.  Cut grass or leaves work well.  If you live near a forest, you can scrape up the forest floor and use that as a mulch.
If your weeds are super tall you could cut, graze or trample them first.
Another option is to cut the weeds at the surface and use them as their own mulch.  I like to just chisel them off with a shovel if the land is dry.
Another easy way is to thoroughly wet the area and pick up the top few inches off soil.  Stick your fork under the mass of roots and flip the whole thing over.

Another way to kill the weeds, if you want to do no work, you can lay a window down on the weeds. The heat of the summer sun will kill all plant material but the soil organisms will be ok.   Life will come right back to the place when you pick up the window.

Maybe this will help:

Paul said, First, it is possible to make newspaper/cardboard that would be safe (by my standards) for gardens.  But most use chemicals that I am not comfortable with.

Most of the newspaper ink is soy based these days (at least in the USA), while I'm not sure it's organically grown, I think that is a much better use for soy than some other things :)

As for the mulch, I am going to come at this from a different perspective. If it is the difference between you having success in your garden or not, I would use the cardboard and newspaper (removing any color, shiny, and tape). Yes, there might be questionably ingredients. I think we also need to look at reality. Most people have far more questionable substances being put in their body or on their body, than will be coming through your home grown vegetables that used newspaper for mulch. Grow your garden and start with the bigger categories.

If using paper/cardboard gets you started gardening, please do. Gardening is great, and you can work towards better than organic after you have a few wins under your belt.

Having said that... you will never be rid of weeds entirely, but if you keep up on using a mulch and weeding regularly, and if you do not till the ground, then your weeds will be much less in a few years.

Looking down the road, I really like using a combination of compost and leaves and woodchips for mulch. Add a couple inches of compost. Add 4-5 inches of fall leaves. Add 6-8 inches of woodchips. Add them in the fall, and in the spring you will have tons of worms playing around in some nice soft soil that is ready for planting. Pull back the woodchips, (the leaves will probably be gone), and plant in that nice dark soil.

You frighten me terribly. I would like to go home now. Here, take this tiny ad:
