Ive seen some partially converted to where the flue comes out the back/side of stove and runs through a bench... still not very efficient, since its not reburning the unused fuel.. My stove flues out the top. Is it feasible to put a heat riser and barrel directly on top of my stove? My biggest problem is how high the bottom of the barrel will be off the floor. It would require quite a drop in flue to get down to the appropriate height of a mass bench. Otherwise the bench would have to be so tall you would need pole-vaulting lessons to get up there and warm your bum.. buahaha! Heat rises, so would it be able to make a vertical dive of a foot or more before turning horizontal into the bench?

Howdy Lexus, welcome to permies.

I am going to bump your question back to the top in hopes that someone who knows more than I will respond.

Lexus Ladelle : Welcome to Permies.com And a big Welcome to the Rocket and Wood stoves forums.

We have a sister site richsoil.com were you can click on the rocket mass heaters Header or the Energy(outline of a solar panel on a pole) icon.
Clicking on that should take you to a series of short rocket mass heater videos done by experts, or supervised by experts, you are looking for the one
Labeled hybrid ! Take a look at that and we will try to get you started !

I did not think I was going to remember Kiko Densers name, Kiko does amazing things with Cob, Runs www.handprintpress.com By going to that
site you can get a lnk to a very interesting wood stove hybrid Look for his " Masonry 'Heater Hat" Video !

While none of these is exactly what you asked for, you really need to get your wood stove burning cleaner before you progress to a Thermal Mass Bench !

With the barrel setting right on top of the wood stove but hanging over the edge to allow the Hot exhaust gases to fall through your extended Transitional Area
down to near the floor ( We will have to insulate this area to protect your floor!) you can then channel your hot exhaust gases through your Horizontal Ductwork
in your Cob Thermal Mass Bench !

This is also a good place to get a Downloaded PDF Copy $18 of the Brand new 3rd Edition of Ianto Evans Great book '' Rocket Mass Heaters "

With over 100,000 RMHs made world wide most were made following 'The Book' and 95% of all the 1st time Builds (That Worked ) were made following
'The Book' It will answer some of your questions and help when you come back here to permits to know when you are describing a part you are using the
same terms to talk about that part, its size, shape, orientation and placement in relation to all other parts ! I don't make a nickel from this recommendation !

For the good of the Crafts ! BIG AL

I really appreciate all of your advice. I will look into these leads you gave me in hopes of gaining knowledge as far as terminology is concerned. It will help me better describe my situation so others can understand. I have a feeling it will answer lots of questions I have too. Plus side, I love to read and learn Awesome info... thank you †
