Today I am fiddling with stumbleupon - a pretty fun web site.

And now I am attempting to tie it in with my overall evil plot for world domination.  When you download the toolbar, you have the ability to tell the site about pages you visit that you think other stumblers might enjoy.

Like an article at richsoil.

Or a particularly interesting thread at permies.

Or a really good youtube video.

Anybody else fiddled with this before?

So .... for those that are interested in helping my sinister plots ...  and for those that might be interested in helping their own site ...here is what I have learned so far about stumbleupon:

You have to pick only the very best stuff.  And you have to not self promote.

If you pick stuff that you think is good and other people don't, then anything else you pick ends up having very low value.  So what I've seen recommended over and over is to never pick all of the pages on a site, but, rather, the best one or two.

Next, picking your own stuff is frowned upon.  That is also a path to doom.

Also, having given loads of stuff a thumbs up and comments then all of your stuff has more weight.  Just thumbs up and comments on just a few things has very little weight.

A thumbs up helps a page.  Especially the very first thumbs up.  My limited understanding is that a positive comment and a thumbs up is worth a hundred times more.  With the comment there is a section for tags/keywords.  Be sure to put in about eight words that fit the page really well.

Since I should not promote my own stuff, here are the things that I would like to ask folks to favor on stumbleupon:

Two articles at richsoil.com

Two of my videos at youtube

Two threads at permies.com

You pick which two.  For each of these, please provide a thumbs up and a comment.

Then play with stumbleupon for a week.  Lots of thumbs up and a few more comments for whatever you think is really good.  And then one more round of two, two and two.

And, as you are stumbling, when you come across anything really good, make sure to let us know about it in the meaningless drivel forum!

As an evil experiment, could folks load up stumbleupon, go to the link below, do a thumbs up and add a stumbleupon comment.

Then let me know here that you did and I'll try to report what my traffic stats are showing.
