So I had an idea to use my old paludarium to create an aquaponics system. My thoughts would be to stock the base with a small poopy fish (based on advice in this forum). Then I would have three descending grow trays. Water would be pumped up to the top and cascade from tray to tray until it lands back into the water. I'm thinking this would help with oxygen content in water.
The volume of the water section of the paludarium is 10 gallons( I think) and the whole thing is 18x18x36. You can look it up. It's made by Zoomed.
Advice? Adjustments or admonishments?

It sounds like a possibility... So the tank is 3 feet tall? That should have enough space in between layers for growing small plants. Are you keeping it indoors, so at a nice consistent temperature? What about lighting?

I've also been thinking about this. In a long-past life, I used to breed tropical fish and grow high-light plant tanks. In the early '90s, the paludarium hobby entered my conciousness and I've never pursued it, but it seemed like a neat ecological balance hobby to get into. More recently I've wondered about very small-scale aquaculture like you're talking about. I run a couple of Aerogardens for winter-time herbs and chiles but I don't love the synthetic nutes. So I've wondered about cycling aquarium waste or vermicompost or *something* more wholesome through the hydroponic modules instead of using the stuff they're designed for.

I am a man of mystery. Mostly because of this tiny ad:
