Whatever happened to real brown sugar?

I am now 86 years old. I remember when I was about 8 or 10 I could buy a block (about the size of a bar of soap) of hard brown sugar for 5 or 10 cents at Saliba's Grocery Store in Peoria, Arizona and eating it like a candy bar. I don't suppose they make it like that anymore.

Do you think that bar was Piloncillo or Leche Quemada?

I only use piloncillo. White sugar or white sugar pretending to be brown make me feel bad after consumption. We use it to make cold teas in summer and hot teas, coffee and cocoa in winter.
