We are in the final stages of pulling an off-grid kitchen together. Doing a conversion in a pole barn, one of my favorite things so far is the wild flag and cobble stone floor. It is on sand and very durable and critter and mud packed boot hardy. I would love to get more info on off-grid kitchen life. I rescue baby calves and recently had a huge learning curve. A baby calf, determined to die due to raging scours. None of my usual "magic" was working, until I compared baby calf digestion to "cheese making"...pretty much the exact same process. Lipase deficiency in calf saliva looks like the culprit. Giving the calf a pinch of Lipase powder a couple times per day near or at nursing times was the answer. I also cleaned out any bad gut bacteria with GRAPE FRUIT SEED EXTRACT (10 drops diluted in about 1/4 cup water)followed in 30 minutes with a slurry of 1/4 cup FOOD GRADE DIATOMACEOUS EARTH in as much water to clear out any die off. I did also amend gut bacteria with PROBIUS powder probiotics once a day for 7 days. But it was the Lipase that straightened out his digestion issues with the milk. Lipase starts the digestive cascade that combines with the stomach acid to utilize the milk.

The lipase was a stroke of genius! With your new kitchen in the works, you might really enjoy the “Year in an off grid kitchen” cookbook.
It’s just full of similar strokes of genius for utilizing seasonal foods, curing and keeping meats with out refrigeration, recipes with so many various optional ingredients and substitutions it seems like you could make the same recipe 100 times, and it wouldn’t seem like a repeat.

I agree on that. I live in Germany and I have not seen black and white editions of books over here. I think it is a clever idee. It is nice to have pictures however the essence of such a book are the recipes. Personally I love to read cookbooks, to get inspiration.
Although we are not off-grid, I love the idea of being able to cook off grid. We have been trying new recipes that is also being able to be used on an open fire, or our propane grill at our lake house. I have several cookbooks that give ideas, but I am definitely going to get this cookbook, even if I am not a winner. I love actual books.
Would it be possible to see a color photo page from inside so I can make an informed decision? Some things are just better in color. Some things do not matter.
