Dale Hodgins wrote: I had a dog who enjoyed the job immensely. She spread vegetable waste all over the floor and pushed dishes clear across the room with her tongue. Worst of all there was a slimy "dog spit" residue that is just as hard to clean as grease.

When I had a dog, I just set the dish/skillet outside*. Occasionally the dog didn't finish one in a day, so I left it there a week or so till something else did. Probably slugs; it was polished super spotless. Or raccoons, as I didn't feel slug-track slime. I rinsed them good in hot water just in case.

* Unless there was a lot of oil in the skillet, in which case I set it in the kitchen trash to drain most of the oil off, before offering it to the dog.

I'd like to think that it was a bear or a crocodile that cleaned the dishes.

I know this is gonna sound weird... but I like washing dishes

That said, I love this idea from a minimal waste point of view. I compost all our scraps (we don't have a dog) but there is still useful guck going down the plughole!!

We haven't got any fish though.....

I converted my pool to a pond years back. It has Tilapia in it. I put my pots/utensils in there, on a step, for a fairly thorough clean up by the fish. They manage to nibble off fairly "stuck on" food. Works well for me. Oily stuff does create a bit of a film on the water surface... Generally allow chickens access to it first and don't have any obvious problems.

I don't have any fish or chickens so I just wash my dishes with hot water.

Like Linda Said, "I like washing dishes".  I feel it is relaxing.

Can Cold Water Clean Dishes?

This is probably a spinoff from the one about Soap and Water.

So, I've only quickly read thru these posts, but I didn't notice much of any of them talking about what I think is maybe fairly obvious. Fish eat food, Fish eliminate what is left after eating the food. The water becomes essentially manure water. Manure water grows nice bacteria and parasites. So now you have dishes free of chucks of food, but fairly covered with tiny, little creepy crawlers. Doesn't sound overly sanitary. And maybe for some folks, rather hazardous.

Sasparilla and fresh horses for all my men! You will see to it, won't you tiny ad?
