O. K., A good alternate title would be the rocket stove vs. the 3-Rock Fireplace. Nearly 40% of the worlds 9 billion people cook all their food
and heat all their water in cooking pots placed directly over/on/in the fire ! This is very inefficient, and is done outdoors or in alcoves weather
permitting 365 days of the year. It is a major world wide cause of blindness striking the Old, the Young, and the mothers and older children
who make up the primary care core of every family !

The carcinogenic smoke is linked to virtually every form of lung disease, cardiovascular disease and stroke, total world wide deaths are put
at 4,3 million and these are preventable deaths!

More information ? Here is a short article that will raise your awareness to spot other articles !

In order for the link to be recognized as a link by the right click drop down menu in FireFox (Linux version) it would be helpful to include the hypertext prefix: http://...

I'll add it here and the completed link is:

Another part of saving lives, in colder climates, is that the rocket mass heater means a fire just needs to be burned while people are awake, and there is heat while they sleep without the dangers of fire (which for the poor is often in some old iron stove someone else threw out).

I very much want to simply BUY a small RMH, get to know it and how to use it, THEN create one. If anybody in the North Ga. Mtns. Has a really small one for sale, please let me know. We are moving Dec. 15 but I have a feeling it's going to be a rough winter. I want to figure this out ASAP and also help Appalachians.
I am happy to proved materials, location and work/time/$ if people want to come together and make some.

Karon Czekala : This is your first post, and gets you a special welcome to Permies.com / Richsoil.com, & a Big Welcome to the Rocket and Wood stoves Forum threads!
With 28,000 Fellow members World Wide, you should be able to come here 24 /7 and find someone who wants to talk about what you want to talk about.

The operation of a rocket mass heater RMH, is an eye-opener for people who have already been heating with wood, This is one of the reasons it is always best to have the
user start out as an Owner / Builder, with D.I.Y. construction you see what is happening internally in your minds eye and it is not mumbo-jumbo, or magic! This sense, a
little practice living with your new happy 'house dragon', and the ear that you develop tell you all you need to know about operating your RMH.

Indeed when built this way, and located at the heart of your home - tending Your Rocket becomes totally automatic as you go through your tasks of daily living, needing as
much thought as you give to adjusting your glasses !

You have given us a pretty good idea of your location, how far up in the mountains are you, this will affect your local climate, and our ability to give you good answers, also
it is a good idea to put yourself out there a little more, hopefully you will find a Fellow Member who is a near neighbor with Rocket and Cob experience !

The good people at Dragon Heaters Dragonheaters.com have several models in several sizes that are shippable D.I.Y. models, and you should take some time to
L@@K at their offerings, This is as close to a portable RMH as you can get!

The Mass in mass heaters means that each build will be custom made for the home it is put in, Moving a RMH means disassembling the Unit into its component parts to
move it, An even more intense project than building one from scratch !

Every single one of Your Fellow Members that have successfully built their own RMH, have started where you are now. I have two suggestions regardless of the eventual
path you take from here ! Goto:::--> Rocketstoves.com to download a PDF Copy of the Brand New 3rd Edition of 'The Book' Rocket Mass Heaters, And spend
some time at http://www.ernieanderica.info/shop , E & E Wisner are the Moderators of our Rocket and wood stove forums and this is a safe site to gather information from!

A third piece of advice, please be extremely suspicious of any Alleged Rocket Build posted on You-tube, there is a huge boat load of Steaming, Stinking Crap on You-tube
💩 👃

For the good of the craft Big AL

great topic!

So, i went to the rocket mass heater workshop at Paul's place and soaked up as much as possible. phenomenal!

when, i got home i bought some fire brick, to be exact, and started stacking my own cores (see erica and ernie's material above, or also google matt walker - another innovator for very simple solutions.)

then, i got a job offer to teach children and adults permaculture for two weeks in Haiti. after some research, i knew the rocket stove technology would be a fundamental teaching. so i practiced it up, with matt's guidance. made adobe bricks, made cinderblock models, made paint can and soup can models. all from of the workshop, the advice and youtube videos. then i went to haiti for two weeks, got back two days ago. phenomenal doesn't begin to describe it. father Glenn at the Kobonal Mission, where i stayed instantly recognized the significance; built from trash and mud, use less wood (haiti continues to be deforested to make charcoal), burns clean.

After arriving, i woke up early and visited there kitchen to see how they worked, there was a lot of smoke. and when i visited the farmers in their often mud/waddle huts they used three stone hearths that plummeted smoke, and then, before i left, we built a rocket stove. i should be going back in May for a larger installation.
