Does anybody know of any scientific study done into raw milk? I would like to know if any of the reported benefits such as the ability for lactose intolerant people to drink it or its help with allergies has ever been subject to a peer reviewed study?

To cite the abstract,

" A tendency towards a lower threshold of reaction and larger skin reactions induced by the processed milk preparations might indicate an increased ability of pasteurized and homogenized/pasteurized milk to evoke allergic reactions in patients allergic to milk."

So basically, both pasteurized and unpasteurised provoke allergic reactions, but pasteurized is more likely to produce allergic reaction.

I thought it was interesting that both studies were not done in the US, makes me think there may be more that are not translated. My other thought is that the assumption here is that raw milk is thought of as automatically bad, so no one bothers to do studies about benefits.

I would be hesitant to draw conclusions based on a study that tested a grand total of FIVE people.

Fair enough!

Can we find more conclusive evidence either way then? I'm curious now but don't have the time to search right away.

Stanford study, using only 16 subjects though. In short, they report no improvement with raw milk for lactose intolerance. An interesting thing on this is it was run for only 8days and did show some adaption to raw milk during that period. wonder what would have happened if they ran it longer?

and several studies listed here (Weston A Price) : http://www.realmilk.com/health/raw-milk-protective-against-asthma-and-allergies/

including "Inverse association of farm milk consumption with asthma and allergy in rural and suburban populations across Europe" with a survey of almost 15, 000 children. Conclusion "Our results indicate that consumption of farm milk may offer protection against asthma and allergy. A deepened understanding of the relevant protective components of farm milk and a better insight into the biological mechanisms underlying this association are warranted as a basis for the development of a safe product for prevention."
