Getting Older

Hello Folks.

My wife and I are getting older 49 and 45, and have come to the realization that we are done with the corporate world, now don't get me wrong we have both been successful, but as time goes on we find ourselves not fulfilled. We are not the best savers so we don't really have much cash, but we work hard and play hard.We are low maintenance and are short on vices.We are looking for a farming/family lifestyle that we can work at with a group. somewhere we can live and eat, in exchange for the work we do. We are going to sell everything and grab our dog and hit the road in search of this somewhere in Canada. We thought that before we head out on our adventure and hopefully new lifestyle, that we would put it to our friends here to see if anyone has any ideas on which way to go. So any ideas ??

A dream is something to take the place of reality until we may once again be realistic and dream.

If your heart is set on Canada, for my money it is all about BC. The Coastal Islands have mild weather and are incredibly beautiful. The Inland Valleys are colder but have great beauty. The Albertan Rockies would be a distant second. The beauty is undeniable, but you must really love cold and snow. Gardening is also not for the faint of heart with such short growing seasons.

Why Canada, though? If you don't mind someone asking.

We are both from Canada, and feel that we would like to live the rest of our lives here. It also makes sense since there is a lot of paperwork to move elsewhere. We feel that Canada has lots to offer, as long as we surround ourselves with like minded people. We could just take off to the states, but we are not looking to hide just begin anew. Fran and I have survived many a cold winter and should be needed, we need to be able to legally work for funds to keep us going. We basically are looking for a new happy healthy fresh start. We have found that if we do not do this within a year we probably never will and that would be a shame to live our remaining years living unhappy with our passions buried. Funny as soul mates we have the same ideals, and are in agreement that we drive our destinies, and if we cant find what we are looking for we have no one to blame but ourselves if we don't get where we what to be. Canada is a beautiful country with beautiful people, and we want a piece of that pie.

There are some good folks doing natural building and permiculture out on Mayne Island and more in the Vancouver area. I know they do workshops and even have some natural houses to rent out as cabins. You may want to check them out on the web. You might find some kindred spirits there.

Welcome to Permies; and the very best to you both as you step off into a new direction. I am that same age bracket and find it harder and harder to stay focused on a good job in the "corporate world". I am hoping for a few more good years to get land paid for in full and some trees started before I hang it up and follow your example.

what part of canada?

Not really caring what part of Canada, we are looking for a group already established. We are hoping to join a group that is in need of hard workers and that would provide living quarters and food. Like minded people that enjoy the company of people that want to contribute and make our lives more enjoyable. Like I said earlier we don't have much cash, but we both are willing to learn and work hard, but we are new to this so we will also need people whom are willing to guide us in this lifestyle. We are not looking for a hand out just guidance so that we are able to contribute to the group.

also they have a facebook and regular webpage
No buy-in costs. They are an income-sharing group and are beginning an earthship build this May for their common house. More info on their sites.
