I'm on desperately limited internet, and it's extremely low limits of upload/downloads per month. Today while clicking several pages open to read later offline, some halting audio started playing, seems to be a song or music. This page was one of the ones open and had a little audio icon on the tab, though I couldn't see any video or audio on the page:

https://permies.com/t/44808/timber/Natural-Building-Asian-Timber-Framing

If Permies pages start having auto-starting audio and video, I'll have to stop going to Permies, or it will use up my limited internet, and then I won't even have access to essential email for the rest of the month, until we pay the extortionate crooks who run our satellite link.

Or, does anyone have any tips on how to stop these things from autostarting when you're on limited internet?

As far as I know we don't have anything that starts audio off like that.

And I can't see any audio on the page.

Maybe someone else can throw a little light on the situation?

I like Burra can't find any audio files on that page and don't have the autoplay problem, so I suspect it's something on your end. Perhaps a pop-under window or some such devious trick. If the people that run your satellite connection really are crooks, why not cheat you in this way so that they can use up your traffic allowance without your consent? Anyway, I don't think the problem comes from permies.com

I couldn't see anything in that thread that would cause audio to play.

I have had audio start playing if I had watched a Youtube, and switched tabs to something else. At the end of many Youtube videos, there is a screen full of other youtube videos. Even without selecting one, sometimes one begins playing in the background while I am on another tab.

Try closing all Youtube tabs once you are finished watching them. (Open them in their own tab, and then close that tab once the video is over.)

Well, the pop-under ad idea sounds possible, though the little audio symbol was actually on the tab of that thread, so that was weird. I wouldn't dream of opening a YouTube page knowingly while I am way out here, because it makes the whole internet stop dead. I wasn't on the satellite connection at the time this happened, so it wasn't that provider doing it. Actually the stupid satellite connection is dead at the moment so I have to come to town a couple times a week for email. The satellite link should be working again within days, though, I hope. Anyway, mysterious, and maybe just an anomaly that can be forgotten. Never mind.
