I can't get the little blue thingies that indicate 'new posts since last visit' to work. The icons on the left, showing new posts within a topic work just fine, but I'm having to scroll through from the beginning of the topic to get to the new stuff - little blue 'New' icon won't turn my cursor into the hand so I can't select it.

Anybody else having this problem or am I just lucky?

I've never tried to click on the "new" flag.  I always figured it was just an indicator.

OK, maybe I'm wanting a fix for what ain't broke. On all my other forums you can light up that little 'New' box and it takes you to the first unread post in that thread. Anywho, I changed my preferrences to show last comments on top and that gives the same result.

Thanks for the reply.

In version 1.1.xx of SMF the image is clickable and delivers the viewer right to the newest message in that thread, since their last visit. I am not certain if that was available in version 1.0.x. It may be something that was lost with the custom tweaks of the permies software.

You can see it work on CP. We were using 1.1.x for over a year before I discovered that function.

Well thanks Mtn. Don, that explains it.

Totally unrelated question:

I made the mistake of clicking on your cabin site - hours later ... wow, awesome project! My question is about the lovely quilt on your bed, did your wife make that? I make my living as a quilter so that got my attention, it's a beauty.

Thanks. My wife would like to claim that as her own handiwork, but can not.

It is handmade and was a gift to us. It is a beauty.

Someone thinks mighty highly of y'all to give such a gift. That represents countless hours of work, and from what I can tell from the picture, highly skilled work. Treasure it!

Thanks for the reply.

Erm... could you say that in English please? Any other forum I visit has a function that allows you to only see the new posts since your last visit or replies to your posts or some such. I am not techy enough to understand what 1.1xx SMf means...
Thanks!

I too miss the "view posts since last visit" tab.
You can search for posts with subject * and author * and change the date from 0 to 1 or however many days since last visit.

The "new" icon not working has been bugging me, too.  I tried unblocking all scripts in FireFox, and I tried IE, which lets anything run in it.  But to no avail.  At least I know its not me, now.

A "new posts" feature makes it much easier to follow a thread, whether there are two posts or two pages of posts which are new.  If you don't check permies daily, its hard to remember where you left off.

Any plans for an SMF upgrade?

Super, Paul.  For now, the email notifications about new posts on threads where I have posted take me right to the new posts.  I'll just subscribe to threads which I am interested in, and keep current via email.

Sample email link:
https://permies.com/bb/index.php?topic=6717.new;topicseen#new

In fact, I'll bet I could just append ".new;topicseen#new" to the url of whatever thread I'm looking at, and jump to the new posts.  I'm gonna try that, right now, on some 7 page thread

I've made a little script to solve this issue, on the client side,

so for everyone with a good browser (firefox for sure, other recent browser i think), can install the Grease Monkey extension, and then use my script. Works for me.

After installation of the script, you can click on little blue "new" icons in the index of forums

I've installed grease monkey!

Er, could you elaborate exactly how I use your script?  I'm a bit of a dumb-ass with computery things. I found the page with the source code but I've absolutely no idea what to do with it...

So after installing grease monkey extension you need to restart firefox. Then go to the url of my script on userscript.org, and click the install button, up right. Click install and then (re)load a forum index page of permies.com

Aha - the big INSTALL button!  That's clever...

When I press that, a pop-up appears and greasemonkey loads, but if I click the install button in the pop-up nothing happens.  If I click the 'show script source' button, it takes me to the source code page, which now also has an install button.  But that won't do anything for me either.

Do I need the latest edition of firefox?  Or does it just not like me...

i think it is normal that nothing shows after the "install" click on the popup, you can see what script you've installed in the Tools > GreaseMonkey > manage script menu,

it should show my Unread script

Or you can try to see if "new" buttons are now links to be clicked

Sweet, permaguy.  Many thanks.  It works great in Firefox 5.  Now I can follow 15-page threads without searching for where I left off.  Again, Sweet.  I'll have to see what other scripts are available for Grease Monkey.

I was leary of calling jquery.min.js from an unknown site, but it looked like a standard function on a legit site, so I took a chance.  It may be deleting the files from c:\ right now, but the New Posts buttons work properly.

Thanks for the return, the script has been downloaded several times but without returns, so i was guessing if it was a good sign or not

i'm an hacker, but in the real/good sens of the term, so no harm is caused by my scripts

Got it!

I needed to upgrade to a newer version of firefox - mine was a bit out of date and didn't want to actually install anything on greasemonkey for me.  I think this is going to make my spam-hunting sessions a bit smoother and faster.

Thankyou!!

It works great on FF 6.0.1.  It did not work on my 3.6, so I upgraded.  I usually won't upgrade for awhile, as it always takes time for my add-ons to become functional in the latest version.
Thanks, this really helps getting to the fresh material.

I know what you mean about the real sense of the term hacker, and appreciate your work.  For those who don't know, hacker originally meant someone who was curious and could take things apart and modify them, not someone who breaks in and steals things.
