I want the words "Rocket Oven Kickstarter"  (and then at the bottom, the word "test") to be the link, but it's not working.  I'm not sure what's changed - I know this has worked for me in the past. . .

When I'm using the "post reply" function, there are a series of buttons, for bold text, for italic text, for underline, etc on to Quote : List : Img : URL : Google : and so on.  I've used the URL button to insert a link before, but it's not working today.

I don't actually know what a bb code button is, I see there's a tick box to "Disable BB Code in this message" but I don't have that ticked.

OK, I'll try it here.   https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/paulwheaton/rocket-ovens-feature-length-documentary?ref=bq4tzb" target="_blank" rel="nofollow">test link

If you look at the screenshot, you can see exactly what's in the code and what shows up in preview.  OK, I just checked preview and it's not working same as above. It could be a bug with preview??  Will try posting and see what happens. . .

Is it because the URL I'm using is really long?  Or something inside the URL, because it has the ref=bq4tzb in it?

That's the button.

At the bottom of your typing window, under the tab "options" if you check "disable html in this message" it should show up okay.  But here's a test.

OK, I'll try this again:

test text for link  Yes!  It works!

Ta Dah!! The link is so long, you have to scroll back in the little text box to find the extra space in the front.

Thanks for your help!

Hmm...  I'm still having the same problem as the OP complained about.  Whether I use the URL option in the posting menu, or type in the syntax you've spelled out, r ranson.  And I've experienced this issue here on Permies over at least the last six months, and possibly much longer (memory fuzzy on that part).

There's an example, on this thread: https://permies.com/t/44847/experience-running-cooperative-shops-wood#734552
I posted a new 'reply" at the bottom of this thread this morning.  (In this case too, the URL is admittedly a long one.  But, posting on Permies, I know the problem has happened for me with much shorter URLs.)

Joel, is this the link you were referring to? https://www.google.com/search?q=DIYode+Guelph&client=firefox-b&tbm=isch&tbs=rimg:CZiSjcz_12Q8aIjj_1pMtWbTNLicBqQW6u26c2VjquRKfr8RbfZJGWvPKGXZlqvHnhy5q1EPFEal5z9_1s0_1l4EN8zgASoSCf-ky1ZtM0uJEd8Gwp7Gdl6tKhIJwGpBbq7bpzYRLIbty3hFsxgqEglWOq5Ep-vxFhH_1L8ISptDDdioSCd9kkZa88oZdEdNsu5gP8VDDKhIJmWq8eeHLmrUR3wbCnsZ2Xq0qEgkQ8URqXnP3-xHTbLuYD_1FQwyoSCTT-XgQ3zOABEb0WscTCRpmg&tbo=u&sa=X&ved=2ahUKEwjLn4Gd6aPcAhW-GDQIHXZ4A44Q9C96BAgBEBg&biw=837&bih=398&dpr=1.2

Let's see if I can stick it in the url code thing, Joel's link

Yes, I see that you were able to get it to work.  My problem this morning and previously has that whether I used the URL posting option on the menu, or tried r ranson's code syntax, when I tried it using the preview option, the preview still showed the whole lengthy URL — not the tidy sort of label for the link.

By the way, I don't remember having this sort of problem on other web forums.

when you press the url button, how are you clearing away the "http:" that automatically shows up?  Are you pressing space?

This is the only way I've been able to reproduce the error.

If I paste in the URL without clearing away the "http:/ first (because it's already highlighted, it automatically overwrites the "http:/", then I don't get that error.

Unless there's some other way you're getting a space in there?  I don't know.  It's the only way I could manage to create the error.

clear away the http:// by pressing space

see, space remains. I highlighted it in blue so you can see it. This space causes the error. To prevent the error, avoid using a space to clear away the http://
