Summary
Paul calls up Sean , who parted with pizza money to get an opinion on whether or not to move away from his friend’s place in California, and if so, what to do?
Sean is currently renting the property by maintaining a campsite on the
land as payment. The crux of the issue is that Sean’s friend, who seems like a good guy, can
sell or otherwise lose the property and thus Sean would also lose use of it and however many years of work he put into it. Similarly from the flip side, Paul knows a guy in a comparable situation that made a great big permaculture garden on one of his friend’s land who got either kicked off for presumably dodgy behavior or simply moving on after completing the work he had been payed to do. When he leaves, he leaves behind wonderful gardens for the owners, so it’s not a completely bleak situation, just not one that he benefits from outside of
experience.
Paul’s stance is that you either need to own the land, or have good confidence (or even better, a written agreement) that you won’t be removed and that you’ll continue to be allowed to work on the property. He learned that the hard way when he tried to rent a place before he bought his current land and wasn’t allowed to do so much as put up a clothes line.
They get talking about
residual income streams and Paul suggests the same strategy as he did in #564 – make stuff with the intent to do good rather than make money, and more money will come to you. Sean feels that the information market that he can provide to is oversaturated, and thus he has no chance of getting anything for his efforts, but Paul points out that he’s probably the third best person on a specific topic in the region – not an absolute authority, but a good person to ask and thus read from.
