Mud and Paul (and Andres) are keen to make an infographic about home heat choices.  Across the top will be types of heat.  And down the left side will be attributes/metrics.  With each metric will be a link to a thread that will act as a source for that row of information in the infographic.  Or, hopefully, a bit of a bibliography.  This thread is one of those threads.

Paul thinks that this work is so very critically important that he wanted to see if by starting these threads, the work can get started.  He very much hopes that you all will add to this effort so that we might be done in a tenth of the time than if it were just him and Mud working on it.

All of the metrics for all of infographic is focused on "average for montana".  Keeping in mind that the average montana home is 2000 square feet.

The row for this thread is Cost to Install DIY and will contain data for the following types of heating systems:

Electric Baseboard - $1200
6 baseboard heaters

Mini Splits - $4000
3 mini split heaters

In Ground Heat Pump - not for DIY

Electric baseboard:
The cost of installing an electric baseboard heater can range from a few hundred dollars for a basic installation to several thousand dollars for a more complex installation. It is important to carefully consider all of the costs involved and to shop around for the best prices on materials.  The actual heater can range from $50-150.

Mini Splits:
The cost of installing a mini split yourself can vary depending on the brand and model of mini split you choose, as well as the complexity of the installation. Generally, you can expect to pay around $500-$2500 for the equipment and materials.

In Ground Heat Pump:
The cost of installing an in ground heat pump yourself can vary depending on the size and type of heat pump you choose, as well as the tools and materials you need to complete the job. Generally, you can expect to spend between $1,000 and $3,000 on supplies and equipment for a DIY in ground heat pump installation.

Natural Gas:
Average unit cost is $1,825.
If you don't already have a gas supply running to your house, installing an underground gas line costs from $120 to $1,350. And, if you need a new tank, you could pay up to $500 to shift the old one (depending on its location and local regulations).

Propane:
Removal and disposal of old equipment $600-$1,000
Furnace and parts $800-$2,000
Tank installation (If leased) $100 contract, $100 meter, $4 per foot gas line installation, and a concrete pad (if needed) at $75 for 1.1 yards
Total Costs $2,675-$5,700

Wood Stove/Modern Wood Stove:
Venting: $25 per linear foot
Stove: $800-5000, Avg $1800
Chimney system: $350-3600, Avg $1500
Hearth Pad: $300-$600, Avg $375
Wall Covering: $50-$500; Avg $265

Pellet Stove:
$1000-$8,000 Depending on size, whether it is steel or cast iron and whether it is a free standing, wall mounted or insert will determine the cost

Masonry Heater:
Depending on if you build the until yourself or buy the unit your costs will vary greatly.
A pre-built masonry heater will cost upwards of $8,000
A DIY unit can be done with about $1200 in materials

Rocket Mass Heater:
Less than $100 to build, or you can buy one outright at $1250 (code compliant liberator cost)

When compared to other types of home heating, Rocket Mass Heaters are very cost-effective. For example, a gas furnace will cost about $600 per year to operate, while a Rocket Mass Heater will cost about $100 or less per year to operate. This means that over the course of 20 years, you could save up to $8000 by using a Rocket Mass Heater!

Google's AI assistant provided this information. Costs may vary depending on location. Please refer to these numbers as they reflect other sources of US national average costs.

Electric Baseboard

For an average 2000 square foot home, the cost of an electric baseboard installation can range from $500-$2000 USD
The cost of materials for electric baseboards is relatively low, with an average price of about $200 for a 2000 square foot home.

Mini Splits

The cost of installing mini splits for a 2000 sq. ft. home is between $2500 and $3000 USD This cost includes the price of the unit itself, as well as the cost of installation.

In Ground Heat Pump

On average, the cost of installation for an in ground heat pump in a 2000 sq. ft. home will be around $3000 USD

A water source heat pump will be around $7000 USD; an air source heat pump will be around $3000 USD

Natural Gas

Propane

According to the National Renewable Energy Laboratory, the U.S average cost for a residential propane system is $ 2,552

However, the type of propane system you choose will greatly affect the cost. If you choose a tankless system, the cost could be as low as $1,500. However, if you choose a system with a tank, the cost could be as high as $4,000.

In addition to the cost of the system itself, you will also need to factor in the cost of installation. Installation costs will vary depending on the type of system you choose, but they typically range from $500 to $2,000.

Wood Stove

The average cost to install a wood stove in a standard 2000 square-foot home is between $500 and $2000. However, if you hire a professional installer, the cost can be as high as $5000.

Modern wood stove

On average, it will cost between $2,000 and $3,000 to install a modern wood stove in your home. This number will obviously change based on the size and style of the stove, but the average cost will give you a decent idea of what to expect.

Pellet Stove

The size of the average home in the United States is approximately 2000 square feet. It is safe to say, then, that the cost to install a pellet stove in an average home would be approximately $2000. This cost includes the purchase and installation of the stove, as well as the cost of the pellets themselves. The average cost of pellets is $250 per ton, and a typical pellet stove will burn one ton of pellets per month. This means that the monthly cost of pellets would be $250, and the annual cost would be $3000. The total cost of installing and using a pellet stove in an average home, then, would be $5000.

Masonry Heater

On average, the cost to install a masonry heater in an average home (2000sqft) is between $2,500 and $5,000. The cost will be higher in colder climates, and if you have a larger home. The cost will also be higher if you choose a more complex design or want to add special features like a bake oven.

Rocket Mass Heater

The cost of installing a Rocket Mass Heater will vary depending on the size of your home and the type of heater you choose. For an average home, it will cost between $2000 and $3000 to install a Rocket Mass Heater. This includes the cost of the heater itself, as well as the cost of installation.

maybe we need a new row in the infographic that is something like "DIY Level"  - how much DIY skill do you need to pull this off?
