This is a badge bit (
BB) that is part of the
PEM curriculum. Completing this BB is part of getting the
wood badge in
Gardening.
Our gardens are getting bigger. Buying seeds each year is costly, requires shipping through fragile supply chains and you're limited to the few varieties that are in the seed catalog. Saving seeds encourages the traits you like in your garden plants and builds
local resilience. Let's save some garden seeds!
Here's a
video on seed saving:
Minimum requirements:
- Save 10 species of annual garden seeds
- Save 2 species of biennial garden seeds
- Collect from
enough fruit/flowers to ensure reasonable genetic diversity
- You don't have to grow the plants
- Maintain purity of each seed variety (no unexpected crosses)
Provide proof of the following as pictures or video (<2 min):
- Each crop at harvest time (or upon acquisition)
- Describe how you're ensuring seed variety purity
- Describe how you're ensuring reasonable genetic diversity
- Each species of seed dried and ready for storage
- Each species of seed in a labeled container
