Summary
Center of Origin: Traditional Farming Methods in Southern Mexico is an
online course available for free on the Going to Seed website.
Julia Dakin produced. Filming and teaching was by Marcos Cortez Bacilio and Bartolo Merino Hernandez. Steve Larson and several others translated. and a cast of people, including Permies users, edited the course.
The course takes the student into several milpa plots and demonstrates the techniques used by campesinos to provide for their sustenance and income. It also takes you into the southern Mexican kitchen, showing how beans and nixtamal are prepared. The course uses text, videos, photos, and diagrams to deliver this information and includes many translations and notes on concepts culturally unfamiliar to most students. The content is broken into eight chapters and an introduction, each containing two to five modules. The course is self-paced and includes access to monthly Zoom calls and an online Discourse community. Course-specific questions and comments may also be posted with each module.
