I've learned a few languages. I was lucky because I began them in college. My first two questions are:

Why do you want to learn French?
How do you see yourself using it once you've learned it?

James
I want to speak French because I met a nice French lady!!  She is in France and I am in USA.  We write via email.  She speaks ok to good English.

One day to travel to France for us to meet in person!  We plan to speak via phone in a few weeks.

I tried Rosetta stone demo and it was hard
Sometimes I could no figure out the pics.

Tried bannel and it was easy for me and in 15th minutes I could say hello and a small talk.

And they have a 20 day money back for any reason

Cost is about $ 10 a month

Paul, try Duolingo https://www.duolingo.com/
It's free and set up so you can learn at your own pace.
