I never noticed that before, you're right! can't wait to get my goaties on some larger acreage and get to watch them go dissapear into the woods to browse. I may need to get an lgd though do ya think I could just trade one of my current dogs for one? . I'm going to have to start utilizing the goats for dog food more.
thanks sue! by healthy do you mean FAT I need to put my doelings on a diet maybe, especially after seeing them in the pictures. maybe I love them just a little too much.
A little extra weight in winter shouldn't hurt anything. And they're going to be stressed by the move and may drop some weight then. I wouldn't cut any feed down.
I had an overweight cat because she was stealing my housemate's kitten's food. Then she ate some greens around the patio that turned out to be oak sprouts, and nearly died. She didn't start eating for over 10 days (just subcutaneous fluids). She had slimmed down considerably by the time she started eating again. Saved by fat!
ha! saved by fat. one of my dogs 'charlene' was saved by fat. she somehow got out one day. as I was waiting to make a left onto our road she ran out excitedly to stare up into the truck. I saw it coming. the truck hardly slowed down that was coming in the oppsoite direction. she ended up on the bridge over our creek about 100' away. I just started sobbing in my truck uncontrollably. charlene had been my almost constant companion for about 5 years at that point, went to work with me almost everyday. can't remember what circumstances kept me from having her with me that day. I was hauling my horse home so that probably had something to do with it. anyway. my neighbor who witnessed it came to my window and asked if i was ok. I asked her to go see if she was still alive so I knew whether I needed to end her suffering. she ran back to my truck and said yes she was alive. I ran back there as she stood up. I drove around the corner ran my horse to the pasture and dropped the trailer, called the vet on the way. vet gave her a deuretic I think and said the only reason she was alive was because....yep....she was officially OBESE and the fat had absorbed some of the impact. I sat with her for days. she couldn't stand up that night and barely could for days. it was so sad to see the shame on her face when she would pee (full of blood) right where she lay. I kept telling her it was alright and she was a good girl. makes me cry here talking about it. she has a quiver in one of her legs now and sort of walks a little tweaked. not enough for anyone but me to notice, probably some nerve damage. some of the hair never grew back right on her face, just a small patch. that dog would still walk through fire for me. found her as a pup dumped in a state park we were trail riding in. nothing better than a good dog.

I think the best way to explain what's going on, is that my mom's hobby has gotten out of control. We don't sell milk or cheese, market for that is more in eastern Iowa, we usually sold alot of the excess goats to local hispanic population, but I guess they have become Americanized or something now, and don't come out as often to get meat goats. So basically our herd is twice the size the past couple years as it has been. Which means alot of manure I have to clean out of barns! It has its positives and negatives. My parents pay me more because I spend alot more time doing stuff with them, but negative is that I like my free time to mess with my own hobbies. I'm been around goats more of my life than around humans it seems.
Oh yeah I forgot to say our family farm is like 180 acres. One of the main reasons I don't leave here, because I don't have the ability to buy anything that big by myself. I really couldn't even imagine having something smaller than 180 acres to walk around on. I would get claustrophobic!!!
