We had a large white chicken appear with our free range flock about a month and a half ago.  It does not belong to any of my neighbors. I had assumed it was a rooster. Then it occurred to me that while it does not lay eggs, it does not crow.  It also gets along well with the roosters. It is ver skittish, so catching it is a challenge.  I did get it into an enclosure as bad weather was setting in. So, what sex and breed is it?

Looks like a male from the neck feathers - sharp, pointy ends - but I hesitate to say that due to the blurriness of the picture. If you can take a clearer picture, might be able to figure out the breed.

Seems like a very tall bird (or maybe is just next to a bantam or other small individual). The stance looks roosterish to me. Lack of crowing or egg laying may just mean it is a large late maturing breed. I have a cuckoo marans-ameraucana cross who is huge and four months older than some smaller breed cockerels who started crowing a month before he did.

Hard to say for sure but I wondered with the size and colour if that was a brahma or brahma cross. Brahmas have feathered legs though and as far as I can see yours doesn't?

I will try for a better image .... it was taken in an icy rain.  My feeling is rooster, but it never crows.

This may seem like a weird question, but how many roosters are there?

The reason I ask is that at one point this summer I had 14(!) roosters.  I was trying to decide who my new keeper rooster was going to be.  One of my criteria is the sound of their crow.  I had a couple Roos, (most of which were barred rock/brahma mix or barred rock/black star mix) that just would not crow.  As I thinned the herd, they finally started to crow.  Turned out that one had a crow that was more like a nightmarish gargling sound.  I could see why he kept quiet...

My other thought is maybe he is just young and hasn't gotten competitive yet.

Hi Tina,

You raise a valid point. I have 2 other roosters not shown for a total of 4. . They each have their own space. The 2 other roosters are more aggressive.

I want to be 15 again …so I can ruin my life differently.

Breed I'm uncertain of, but pretty dang certain that's a roo.

Edit: Could be a Sussex mix?

Hi Jen,

It could be anything. I have had it for a while, so it has put on weight.  I have it enclosed with a mild mannered rooster. So far, there have been no conflicts.


Still, no crowing and no eggs. But then, all my hens have stopped laying.

Yeah, not all roosters are jerks. Those get eaten. It's nice when you have a pleasant fella around. The chickens appreciate it too as they might get a break from excessive attentions..

Glad he's fitting in with your feathery kiddos! Sounds like a good match.

With the better photos I withdraw my earlier speculation of Brahma - no feathery boots and the legs are the wrong colour.  I think the suggestion of Sussex is correct. The pink legs are a clue. Not many chickens with those.  If you google Coronation Sussex you will find images that are a very close match to your mystery rooster.
