If you happen to have both a new fangled electric car and one or two evil Jack Russells, be aware that they think its great fun to attack your fender lining and chew through cables, sensors and other technical gubbins.

My insurance company isn't very amused...

OMG Jason;
That really succks !
What can you do? Put a wire fence around your car each time you leave it...?
Build that garage you always wanted and park in there?
Spray pepper sauce all around your car?
I won't suggest anything about your doggys (children) As I imagine the car would leave before your puppys.

Hi Thomas. Not sure what we're going to do yet. We only have a small front yard and I don't want to tie the mutts up. We might have to park it behind our house, which is a pain.

The dogs are pretty smart, so I'm hoping I can train them to not eat cars. 😄

Jason, I hate to say we see this sort of thing pretty often in our shop. The bummer is that it's mostly body work, rather than pricey electronics, at least where we are. I once saw a car that had been completely decimated by two rottweilers; the owner was someone we knew, owned a used car lot and had said he wouldn't bother putting in an alarm/camera security system, since he had his dogs. Famous last words.... They kept the thieves out, but apparently a cat or rat or something was under this car and they decided to rip it apart to get closer. Poor guys probably ruined their teeth.

Generally we suggest trying to set up a "car corral" to keep the dogs away from it. Often they will wee on the wheels, even if they're not chewing on your car, which can ruin your brakes and cause other issues. And once one goes, they all have to go on top of it...

Hi Tereza,

I had a similar thought about somehow fencing off the car. It looks like the best option. Of course, it'd be way easier if I didn't also have a bunch of motorbikes getting in the way!

It'll be 2 or 3 weeks before the car is returned, so I see I'll have to get my new workshop somewhat ready to give me more room on the driveway. To be fair, I needed a shove!

Park on a metal plate and hook the car to an electric fencer with ground to the plate. If the dogs make a connection metal to metal they will regret it including peeing on wheels. Don't know what to do for them eating plastic unless you can paint it with conductive paint.

Country oriented nerd with primary interests in alternate energy in particular solar. Dabble in gardening, trees, cob, soil building and a host of others.

They nearly fried themselves by earing my car. They had started attacking one of the high voltage cables. That would've ended badly.

We have a plan for a fence around the parking bay, so hopefully I won't need to use shock therapy on them.

Do they have behaviour issues?
I have not seen dogs that are well behaved damage cars.
I repair flyscreens and the dogs that damage them seem to have anziety issues.

No, they're pretty good. I think they were hunting small lizards and got carried away. There are scratches in the plastic wheel arches which they wouldn't normally do.

I know it sounds about off but could cars be emitting a frequency that the dogs just do not like causing attack?
