What should be the temperature of the outer wall of a stainless steel triple wall woodstove chimney?

Is your question referring to the chimney portion inside the house or above the roof?

With a triple wall pipe, it should be close to the air temperature.

It's a hijacker! Do what he says and no one will get hurt!

What about double wall? Any idea how hot?

What about single wall about 8ft up above a woodstove? Hot enough to burn bare lumber if there is nothing but the flashing between the wood and the chimney?

I am building a little shed and I have a little old woodstove I kinda want to put in it. Just curious if I REALLY need walled pipe. There is no insulation or anything... And yes, I know the "right answer" hahaha

if you are prepared to have creasote buildup, risk a chimney fire, and waste half your wood keeping a chimney hot so it will vent properly you you can use single wall pipe...

From past experience warm to the touch but not hot. It would depend on air temperature. Sometimes right at the joint between two sections it will feel warmer.

Hey David;
I have three wood burners and only one has metalbestos outside the building.
I clean the chimney cap on that stove as it creasotes up, being a hill billy built box stove run damped down all the time.
All three do have class-A roof jacks.
This will scare you, the two single wall penetrations are using hvac thin wall pipe... if fact they are thin wall from the stove and up out the roof
Luckily they are both connected to my batch boxes.
Stack temps on both batches run around 150F, nothing but steam, and they have never seen creasote!

A simple yes would do, hahaha.

Seriously though, I have no fear of a chimney fire because I would clean my chimney. Stove would be rocking all the time it's lit anyways, minimal creosote there and no worries about keeping the chimney hot. Just making sure I won't burn the roof off! Thanks!

What's that smell? I think this tiny ad may have stepped in something.
