Steven Feil : As part of a UN-Pressurized water heating system, and used as a water tempering system not intended to provide endless hot water! and placed
after the 1st 4 feet of the Thermal Mass Bench, It could be useful, any attempt to make this as part of the regular house plumbing can result in the Squish- Boom
we try to avoid - Think Boston Marathon Bombing with more full body, full thickness Burns ! Your comments, and questions are welcome and solicited! BigAL!

'Why' is a tricky question, but you should probably read this.

I would probably avoid it for RMH use. The reasons is chimney orientation. Wrapped around a horizontal chimney that gives you a lot of places for things to air lock or steam lock if you have a problem. In the chimney on the coal stoker at the shop I have a water based heat recovery system. It is made up of 11ft runs of pipe with an elbow and a street L between them so they run up and down in the chimney. This forms 5 complete up down cycles in the chimney. Think of it as a repeating S rolled into a circle. If I get multiple air locks in this getting it restarted circulating is nearly impossible. If it over heats and flashes to steam it is very violent in boiling the water out of it. Since it is inside the chimney which is heavy wall pipe and since the lines to the reservoir are shielded explosion is only of minor concern but it is a risk even though this system is open to the air. You have less height in any one coil but your total head with all those wraps in a horizontal system would probably be similar if you boiled momentarily and generated steam pockets at the top of each coil. It would concern me even in an open reservoir system. I know what mine sounds like when it is boiling out and if it were not for the fact that it is shielded inside the heavy wall pipe chimney it would scare me. For horizontal you would probably be better with something like my system inside the chimney.(assuming you were running clean enough to avoid creosote always) I would use a T top and bottom to split the flow for thermal siphoning reasons. That 5 up down cycles of 1/2" schedule 40 pipe reduces the stack temperature from 450 degrees to 350 degrees when the furnace is running hard. The water is driven by a 1/25 hp pump circulating pump.

Steven Feil : You've been given a lot to think on, And a lot can be added to this! But, just think of this, what will happen if your Rocket Mass Heater RMH, has been
burning for hours, the internal bricks are glowing red hot, that last piece of wood you put in there seemed to burst into flame as soon as it was droped in through
the feed tube, The lights flicker, and go out - You are standing there in the dark, The water in your coil is very close to flashing to Steam, the circulating pump
quit, and will nor work with out electricity !

Now make it interesting , you are miles away and its a family member standing There ! Thats a lot to think on ! For the good of the Craft ! Big AL !
