Hello Ted Abbey,

Could I ask what is the name of the hot springs you occupy, and what is the name of the closest town you speak of that is 5 miles away ?.

What is your most pressing need as far as a single project you need to get done before your many other pressing needs ?.

If you had some money, some excess money, what would you spend it on first ?.

My name is Clay from Scottsdale Arizona. Wanting out of here.

Thanks Ted

I'm a certified Master Gardener. Highly experienced in subsistence living, e.g., Alaska, Maui, Arizona and New Mexico. My current homestead in New Mexico lost its water source in the persistent drought. And it's not coming back, because the State of New Mexico is diverting water rights to the cities.

I'm seriously thinking of moving to where there is an abundance in water. I've been to Death Valley and surrounding area, so I have an idea of the climate, challenges and environment.

What I'd like to know from you is what's the payoff in your situation? You said you have been there for 5 years. You don't actually own the land. But you are working hard making improvements. So what happens when the owner(s) tell you "it's time to move on?"  Personally, I don't mind doing the work, but it has to at least have a simple business plan with a sustainable goal.  Just living in a remote and beautiful place isn't enough. I can stake a gold mining claim and do that and/or work as a hunting guide.  I highly prefer agronomy;however, I'd like to work with persons who think ahead.  Another 5 years will go by fast. Then what?

Shoot me an email with your goals, and maybe I'll pay you a visit. I think I already passed by your hot spring a time or two.  Take care.

Signed,

Guy

Hey Becky, I understand your concern if you are of a fair complexion.. but the sun is the sun no matter where you are. The big difference here is the heat during the summer. Wisdom is following the example of all desert creatures.. out early and late, and waiting out the heat of the day in shade. The sun and heat don’t bother me, and I am blessed by my mothers Hawaiian genetics with the ability to tan. “Only mad dogs and Englishmen go out in the midday sun.” -Rudyard Kipling.. and I’m not an Englishman, so..?

Hello Ted, Sorry I can't join you there, having our own homestead(s) + young family & preparing for my wife's sabbatical/ son's worldschooling year.  However several things about your post have resonated with me.

We camped our way around Death Valley & Hot Springs last winter & especially enjoyed my long-anticipated visit to the Amargosa River & China Date Ranch, having not been through the area much since apprenticing nearby in the late 80s.  I'm a drylands horticulture ecological designer with a couple of hardscrabble decades under my belt in long-drought continental high desert New Mexico, several years in whiplashing subtropical coastal southern California, & experience from Central Asia through sub-Saharan Africa to the driest region of Europe, & especially northern Chile.  Over the years I fielded 00's of WWOOFER inquiries but only had one actually arrive who left the next day for Alaska, took whole-year apprentices but had the only two who almost made it abruptly leave for love.

These days I'm mostly involved with rare & high- & dry-land adapted fruit/ nut/ berry & veg varieties, rain-water catchment/ -only irrigation/ drought fallow, & GIS-based site assessment & project development.  In northern Chile's Atacama Desert I've run down several adjacent oases where different water mineral qualities support very different crop types; in central Sudan I've encountered a range of subsistence strategies across sedentary cultivation/ nomadic pastoralism/ wild-foraging, on the Afghan frontier & in the Taklamakan desert I've eaten the best fruit I've ever found quite a few varieties of which I've since started growing here, & in the Desert of Tabernas in Andalusia I'm involved with regenerating an ancient farm with Roman & Arab irrigation works producing almonds & olives but well-placed to pick up a lot of slack from the destruction of the drylands ag center in Aleppo Syria.

If there's any remote assistance I could offer, please let me know.  Patrik

Fred, thanks for viewing my thread. My idea is for this place to be as self sufficient as possible.. and I’m sure that is the goal of most Permies.

I would be interested in learning what things we can be growing there. Is it where water is naturally adequately available there? Is there good soil around there for that?

Fred, I have grown some nice gardens here every year. Tomatoes, peppers, squash, corn, garlic, onion, sweet potato, etc. I’ve also planted several fruit trees, olives, and grapes. The soil is highly mineralized, but lacking in organic material.. pretty standard for the desert. Addition of compost, manures, and mulch gives great results. As far as water, we have an over abundance of gushing springs. Future plans include a green house for extending seasons and starting plants, and field preparation and irrigation for pastures and crops.

Ted, that you are growing that much makes it very interesting to me. I was concerned it might be too much a desert area where hardly anything useful enough to us would grow. I will still like what would be grown there for any who come to this to expand to be enough to adequate for all. If this is how it would be, I will want further communication. It can be here, through "Purple Moosages, or email with it possible through my address vegrox@aol.com.

Fred Frank,

This is the desert, and growing some things can be a challenge. My single biggest limiting factor here is the lack of help. I had hoped to be much farther along in this project after five years, but doing everything alone is not easy. The ideal would be complete self sufficiency, but that will take time. Every small step towards that goal is a victory. I will send you a message, or feel free to email me at: mad4782@gmail.com

Wishing you and all Permies a great day!

Hi Ted.  I’m new here and have been doing a bit of research on off grid opportunities.  I know that I’d be a better fit in an intentional community versus doing it all myself.  I go to Pahrump a bit and wonder if I could come by and check out the springs and maybe help out for a week or so early summer.   I can work without being directed and am happy to do monotonous chores.  I can cook, brush the dogs, clean, etc.  Give me a shout out if that’s a possibility. I’m just starting on this path and looking at all the options and ways to live.

Thanks, Emily

Hey Ted
How are you doing at your dessert oasis? I'm curious as to how things are going as it sounds and looks like an awesome initiative in a beautiful sustainable spot, and you haven't posted in awhile. Hope all is well
My name is Michelle, I'm a mature Canadian from a rugged Kootenay Mountains lifestyle with many survival and homesteading skills. I'm exploring new opportunities in intentional community living and permaculture stuwardship here and abroad.
I am curious 🤠

Hi Michelle. I’m still here, and the search for co-creators continues. Thank you for replying to my post, as my weekly self bump to my own thread makes me feel like a man shouting out in the wilderness. I am not sitting on my hands, nor holding my breath, waiting for help to arrive, as life continues and demands my attention and action. This journey is marked with loss, difficulties, and pain.. but balanced with moments of pure ecstatic joy, new life, and the healing hot water that makes it all worth it. In short, a perfectly bittersweet experience.. and that is the flavor this warrior prefers!

Feel free to PM me here, or email me at mad4782@gmail.com if you would like to know more. Thanks again, and have a great day!
