Caribbean / Tropical Forum??

Yo. This is Joe in Haiti. I explored the regional forums the other day and I was sad to see that there were no Caribbean nor Tropical "regional" forums. One of my biggest challenges has always been the difficulty of finding people doing Permaculture in a climate like my own. Is there any chance that we could open up that category?

I'm not sure we'd have enough traffic to be worth having just a Caribbean forum. How about just 'Tropical'? Would that be good enough?

Fire some suggestions at me.

A tropical category would do it for me. The main need is interaction with people with similar seasons, cycles, patterns, etc.

If you stumble on any other topics that look like they belong in that forum, use the report button and tell us and we'll make them show up there.

Or, if you happen to have permie-style pie, you should be able to access the tool to do it yourself.

I might add a Caribbean one too. But probably after dinner, I need a break...

Have you looked in the South America/Central America/Mexico forum. Though I know it also includes a fair bit of Desert and Mountain, much of that area is also tropical

Right there with you man! I live in Puerto Rico, really close to the coast.. so advice on just tropical region is good but it would be awsome to get something a little bit more specific. I'm just starting my project, implementing techniques for rainwater harvesting and water management in the house. Gardening for supplying my food truck with fresh veggies.. just looking for self sufficiency and freedom.
Anything in particular that you need help with?

ps: there's this book that was released here in Puerto Rico which is called "La Tierra Viva" Manual de Agricultura Ecologica, its an organic gardening book designed for Puerto Rico but I guess it would work for you!

I'm from DR and I have the same problem, it is a quite hard to find good info about organic planting

Sometimes I use the USDA Zone Map, just to know I kind of vegetable I can plant.
I find really good info about organic culture, but always in English

Well I hope we can find more caribbean planters

Oh, great! I have a small farm, and I grow my own veggies with my family help, also I sell some of them.

Most I have now some Lettuces, fuit that maybe you have there,
At this moments I have plant

Different kind of pepper like Cubanela, ojo de pajaro (Birds Eye pepper), tomatoes, we call "Tomates de ensalda" the bigger
Cashew nut, basil, cucumber, spinach, asparagus and another else.

Great Carol! I love pineapples. Such a great plant, great fruit, and very easy to care for with the right placement. I'm looking to plant some cashews soon myself. Good luck, and welcome to Permies .

Hey Pedro. Thanks for reaching out. Welcome to Permies.

I wasn't looking for anything in particular when I had created this post. I was just looking for the right set up for community support and the right place to post when I actually do have a regional question.

The Tropical Forum exists now, by the way. I haven't posted to it much, but Burru Maluca indexed some great posts there when she created it. It's worth browsing through, even just for general knowledge.

I'll be looking out for you on there!

Hello! I feel I would also benefit from a Caribbean regional section if you're still willing to create one. I will be moving to Puerto Rico in the next year. Very exciting!

Hi Joe (Joseph) and others. I am doing some deeper research now, because it seems I am really going to live in the Caribbean ... on the island of Curaçao.
Moving from the Netherlands to the Netherland's Antilles is my 'dream' since some years now. My husband was from there. Because of his bad health he prefered to be in the Netherlands (the only hospital of Curaçao is not a good place to be). Now he is not there anymore, circumstances changing, time could be ripe to follow my dream ...
My husband and I talked about my ideas and plans sometimes. He backed my plan to go and live at Curaçao (after his death). He did not really understand permaculture, but he understood I was serious.
