I have never really been into
facebook. Jocelyn convinced me years ago that I really needed to create an account there.
One thing about facebook is that if people send me a PM, I cannot forward it to somebody that might be able to do something with it. I also find that the tiny little space is not
enough for me to say what I want to say. Even further, there were several times that I tried to reply to something but I couldn't get it to work. I finally got to the point that I just stopped replying to stuff there.
So I am creating this
thread so that in the future if anybody sends me a PM on facebook, I can send them a link to this thread.
Here on permies, you can ask your question publicly. You can even add lots of pictures and videos. And if icky people reply, we delete that ick. So the result is that you generally get feedback from dozens of people and not just me.
Further, if you post here, I can email people a link to your post so even more people can see it. Other people can email links to the posts too. Email, twitter, reddit, facebook, pinterest .... everything.
Even more, if you don't receive an EXCELLENT answer within 48 hours, you can invoke
the 48 hour rule.
If you need something a bit more discreet, you might want to check out
the full contact us page (which includes my email address) and the page about
getting consulting.
why won't you friend me?
Apparently I am limited to 5000 friends and I think I have only about 30 "friend" slots left. I get about a dozen friend requests per day - so I just friend those where we have ten more friends in common. Plus, for a while I was getting spam on my facebook thing - and i don't need the extra spam cleaning chores. I feel that by limiting things to the "ten friends in common" thing, that solves a lot of that.
But even more importantly, you probably don't want to connect to my personal facebook page. Jocelyn and others have created two pages for folks:
the permies.com facebook page
the paul wheaton facebook fan page
I go to facebook about once a week. But I check my email about a hundred times a day. And I "watch" several forums on permies and if somebody creates a new thread, I get an email. For something that says it is invoking the 48 hour rule, I give that a very high priority.
Overall, I have a lot of people that want to visit with me directly every day. More than I possibly can. So I am trying to find ways that ALL people get ALL of their questions answered. And I think these forums are the best solution for that.
