I just happened across this site from the University of Wisconsin and a large test plot operation they are running for edible shrubs.  I'm geeking out on all the variety information and comparisons.  It's definitely worth checking out if you're picking new plants.    Enjoy!

Thanks for that info! I love learning about plants I've never heard of before.

My pleasure!  The things I like about it are how they test different varieties and then tell you how they actually compare.  If I go to a nursery that has two seaberries, I can get a vague idea of which might work better for me.  But their site site evaluates how 11 did in the real world over 10 years, what kind of growth habit they actually had, taste, ease of harvest, etc.

Thanks so much for the link, Mike.

I ordered American hazelnut (filbert) and native elderberry from Prairie Nursery to plant this year. I'm looking for black currents next season. I read somewhere they are more nutritious than the red ones.

Do you have any experience with any of these shrubs?

No problem, when I ran across it I knew I needed to share it.

I don't have any experience with currants.  They're on my list for my food forest and based on the UW info I was going to steer towards red currant.  I was also going to try to find cultivars that are resistant to white pine blister since I have white pines in the area.

Another awesome site I found today is a seedling vendor in Wisconsin (down by Milwaukee:(  ) called Chief River Nursery.  I'm not sure how they are to work with but their prices and selection are pretty good.  1 hazelnut (12-18") = $6.49, 100 hazelnuts = $1.87 ea.
Get out of my mind! Look! A tiny ad!
