The Ice Cream Man

Rum and raisin, vanilla, butterscotch, walnut, peach:
You would rhyme off the flavors. That was before
They murdered the ice-cream man on the Lisburn Road
And you bought carnations to lay outside his shop.
I named for you all the wild flowers of the Burren
I had seen in one day: thyme, valerian, loosestrife
Meadowsweet, tway blade, crowfoot, ling, angelica
Herb Robert, marjoram, cow parsley, sundew, vetch
Mountain avens, wood sage, ragged robin, stitchwort,
Yarrow, lady’s bedstraw, bind weed, bog pimpernel.

Michael Longley, poet.

Those who are skilled and peaceful,
who seek the good;
may they be able, straightforward
of gentle speech and not proud.
May they be content, unburdened,
with their senses calmed.
May they be wise, not arrogant
and without desire for the possessions of others.
May all beings be happy.
May all live in safety and joy.

Who wrote this play
in which we enter
laugh, cry and exit
according to a script?
No god or saint could write it.
Only your own mind
could write this story.

Without music no discipline can be perfect,
for there is nothing without it.
For the very universe is held together
by a certain harmony of sounds,
and the heavens themselves are made to revolve
by the modulation of harmony.
Music moves the feelings and changes the emotions.
Every word we speak, every pulsation in our veins,
is related by musical rhythms
to the powers of harmony.

Blessed are you
who bear the light
in unbearable times,
who testify
to its endurance
amid the unendurable,
who bear witness
to its persistence
when everything seems
in shadow
and grief.
Blessed are you
in whom
the light lives,
in whom
the brightness blazes—
your heart
a chapel,
an altar where
in the deepest night
can be seen
the fire that
shines forth in you
in unaccountable faith
in stubborn hope
in love that illumines
every broken thing
it finds.

There are more ideas on earth than intellectuals imagine.
And these ideas are more active, stronger, more resistant,
more passionate than "politicians" think.
We have to be there at the birth of ideas,
the bursting outward of their force: not in books expressing them,
but in events manifesting this force,
in struggles carried on around ideas, for or against them.
Ideas do not rule the world.
But it is because the world has ideas
(and because it constantly produces them)
that it is not passively ruled by those who are its leaders
or those who would like to teach it, once and for all, what it must think.

Michel Foucault
15 October 1926 – 25 June 1984)
a French philosopher, literary critic,
and historian of ideas who analyzed the relationships
between power, knowledge, and liberty,
and how they are used as a form of social control through institutions.

Go lightly, simply.
Too much seriousness clouds the soul.
Just go, and follow the flowing moment.
Try not to cling to any experience.

Jeene Kaisa Pyra bina. (What is life without love)
Is Duniya mein Aaya ho to (Now that you have come to this world)
Ek Duje se pyra karo. (Love each other, one another)

Look in her eyes
The face of love
Look in her eyes
Oh, there is peace
No nothing dies
Within pure light
Only one hour
Of this pure love
To last a life
Of thirty years
Only one hour
So come and go

Song, ‘The Face of Love’

We’re always trying
to free ourselves from misery
but we go about it the wrong way.
There are a lot of small sweetnesses in life
that we ignore because they’re so fleeting.
It’s very important to look at
what lifts our spirits and brings us happiness—
to cherish those moments
and cultivate appreciation.
Happiness comes from being receptive
to whatever arises
rather than frantically trying
to escape what’s unpleasant.

Truly, we live with mysteries too marvelous
to be understood.
How grass can be nourishing in the
mouths of the lambs.
How rivers and stones are forever
in allegiance with gravity
while we ourselves dream of rising.
How two hands touch and the bonds will
never be broken.
How people come, from delight or the
scars of damage,
to the comfort of a poem.
Let me keep my distance, always, from those
who think they have the answers.
Let me keep company always with those who say
“Look!” and laugh in astonishment,
and bow their heads.

When I despair, I remember that all through history
the way of truth and love have always won.
There have been tyrants and murderers,
and for a time, they can seem invincible, but in the end,
they always fall.
Think of it--always.

I refuse to accept the view
that mankind is so tragically bound
to the starless midnight of racism and war
that the bright daybreak

can never become reality.
I believe that unarmed truth

When you begin to touch your heart
or let your heart be touched,
you begin to discover that it’s bottomless,
that it doesn’t have any resolution,

how much warmth and gentleness is there,
as well as how much space.

Human life inevitably includes confusion,
contradiction, harm, and error.
What matters is whether we are willing
to acknowledge when we have lost the thread,
take responsibility, make repair where possible,
and realign ourselves with what is deepest and truest…
and to try, in whatever ways one can,
to respond to the suffering of the world.
