I got the wrong idea to start with: I'm good at that! I thought, until I actually read the post, that Permies was going to arrange the film and the poll was to find out which one to go for! Wouldn't work for me this time of the year, there's too much to do. Mid winter would be better!

I think what you describe sound correct to me - you vote for the film you wanna watch with a thumbs up or thumbs down.  Then later today, I'll post a link to the film that gets the most votes.

Despite diligent hunt through other movie night posts, I can’t seem to figure out what time… (Plus in what time zone for that time)?

Dersu Uzala looks pretty interesting to me, count me in.  I didn't know there was a movie night.

Zoran Jovanovic wrote:It is not that I have something against watching the videos above. But when I hear movie night I always think about movie Dersu Uzala.

I think it fits well to permies. It is about man who lives alone in the Siberian forests at the beginning of  20th century when he meets bunch of soldiers mapping the area. He lives and travels with them some time.

I've never heard of this but definitely want to watch it!  Read some of the comments by others and, well, for sure I would like to watch it.  Makes me think of Anastasia from the Ringing Cedars--so far not a movie but only a book series

Thanks for suggesting this!  I probably can't watch it on Friday night with everyone.

And the winner is:  Akira Kurosawa's Dersu Uzala!

Head on over to https://permies.com/wiki/189965/Movie-Dersu-Uzala-Akira-Kurosawa to watch the film (subtitles and dubbed versions available).  Don't forget to let us know what you thought of the film!  Did you like it?  How did you find it related to permaculture?  Did you throw tomatoes at the screen?  Inquiring minds want to know . . .

For everyone who suggested we watch all of them - we'll forward the runners-up to subsequent movie nights for voting, so keep coming back and one day they'll probably get picked!

If I could throw one more suggestion for the future movie nights, it is  documentary "The architecture of mud" about the ancient building techniques in Yemen.  I saw it long time on youtube. Not to find it anymore on youtube.

I found it on this site https://www.architel.tv/architecture-of-mud

where is available for free and the web page has a pretty good description of the movie.

Dir. Caterina Borelli

Duration: 53 minutes
Production: 1999
Language: English (subtitles)

The Hadhramaut region in the south east of Yemen is well known for its mud brick architecture. Throughout the centuries, the population has developed very sophisticated building techniques and created a unique architectural environment. Spectacular structures such as ten-story mud brick tower houses rise up from the valley's floor. In interviews throughout the documentary, the masons describe their working techniques and the challenges they face with the introduction of new, imported building materials. The Architecture of Mud documents the vernacular architecture, the building craft and the society they belong to.

Rather than doing a democratic movie night, I just want to watch this one again, and invite other permie folks to share their thoughts about it, as well.

What's it about?

A truffle hunter who lives alone in the Oregonian wilderness must return to his past in Portland in search of his beloved foraging pig after she is kidnapped. source

My friend Nathan states it well in his article The Sorcerer's Tears: on Pig, The Green Knight, and the Climate Change Imagination:

The film treats the Portland food scene with a mix of realism and satire. It is most effective when it portrays spheres of high-end contemporary dining as antiseptic, Marie Kondoed zones of late capital where nature is evoked as simulacra. Through Robin’s perspective, we see the hypocrisy built into an industry that tries to evoke nature by ruthlessly controlling it.

As someone who came to agriculture by way of love for food and beauty, and a reverence for nature and simplicity, I found this film to be resonant with my permaculture ethos.

I think Pig is currently a rent-or-buy sort of thing, so my apologies to those of us who like movie nights but are only down for the freebies.  But if you have $1.99 and aren't phased by a couple bloody scenes, I give this film 9 out of 10 acorns.

Pig was so good.  Agreed. 9 out of 10 acorns.  Yes, some painful scenes.  But it made up for it later, completely, in a deeply surprising and meaningful way.

On a separate note, I told friends about that movie to gain a sense of what living in the PNW forest is like. I thought it captured a lot.  Though there was one inaccurate moment (imo) I caught, as a native PNWer...  I won't give it away though. It's so minor, you'd have to have grown up in the woods to notice it.

I am in😊

But I won’t be watching with y’all on the same night.

I’ll need to hook up my DVD player to my tv, and then get my hands on a dvd, which seem to be readily available, but I am not going the hour and a half to town until next week

In having this movie night you’re giving me a gift!  I need to get the two things attached and functioning, just haven’t had a reason to do it “now”

Thanks,

Enjoy!

I will catch up soon!

We just finished watching Ratatouille with the kids . . . And I cried . . . And then I realized I cried for the same reason I cried during Pig.  The way food can transport you to a moment and bring a new perspective.  I'm a sucker for that.

I loved the movie!! I watched last night 1/2 and then finished today! I wish I could get on Permies every day! I am so busy in our little town with a private medical practice but I dream of all the ideas I see on Permies and in this movie!! I save every email to a folder to look at one day! I dream of coming to Wheaton Labs!! Maybe in retirement!! I will have to find a way! The movie was great!

Maybe we should do another Permies Movie Night, now that the nights are so long and the growing season is winding down in a lot of the northern hemisphere.  What do y'all think?

I'd appreciate it if you pronounced my name correctly. Pinhead, with a silent "H". Petite ad:
