While I have raised pigs before, this is my first attempt at breeding them. How can I tell if a pig is pregnant?

Hmmm... pigs are supposed to be a lot like humans. Increased appetite, larger nipple/breast equivalent, nesting behaviors, looking *really* happy. (My Muscovy Duck who *insisted* the weather was nice enough for her to try for ducklings, is looking pleased as punch on her collection of eggs, straw and down despite over-night lows in the 3 C range - so animal behavior is an indicator. That said, my friend's dog gets grumpy instead of pleased, but she's a diva.)

I remember reading at Sugar Mountain Farm that pigs have a built-in pregnancy indicator. The sow's external genitalia typically points down, but the weight of the unborn piglets pull the womb down, so that it begins to point up. The picture below is an old one of my Polly about six weeks before she farrowed. I never really saw a change in what I call the "piggy pregnancy pointer," but maybe it was just my pig. Something to keep a curious eye on at any rate.

John ; If she starts demanding very unusual foods ... than you can be sure..
Oh Yeah If you are the dirty rotten sob that had something to do with this....  you can be sure...

If she shows the signs that the other more serious respondents have suggested ... you can be sure...

Have a great Day!

Hi Leigh,

My pigs are already pretty  sure I'm a pervert. This should remove all doubt.

Wait  a minute Thomas.  Are you telling me that when my wife told me to make sure the pigs were bred .... well I may have misunderstood?!!
