I don't know for sure why my pictures were replaced.

My post I just made here looked fine on preview. Now my images are replaced with one I've never seen before. I'm hoping someone can tell me whether something in permies broke or the server I remote linked them from got grumpy about it. (Which would be for me to fix.) The URLs used to be http://backyardaquaponics.com/forum/download/file.php?id=91105 and http://backyardaquaponics.com/forum/download/file.php?id=91107.

Well that's seriously odd!

the images should be

and

And, instead they're

https://permies.com/i/1299530/file.jpg

and

https://permies.com/i/1299530/2/file.jpg

I think there were some recent changes that made it so if the width of an images was shrunk, the actual pixel count was changed, and a new thumbnail URL is made. But, that shouldn't affect the actual image.

Also, I've never seen an I in any of our image files before. Usually there's an A for attachment.

Let's see if the images stick once I post this!

Okay, those showed up well. But I notice that original images were really big and took time to load. Let's see what happens if I shrink their size to make the page load faster

Ooooh, weird. I didn't manually adjust their sizes--or urls. But, when I refreshed the page, the images were smaller, faster to load, and the image not only changed it's URL to https://permies.com/i/1299630/file.jpg, but also lost the caption I put on it. Each image had originally had the caption as part of the code, like this

And now it looks like this:

But, at least my image looks right. Your's looks nothing like it should.

If you'd like, I think I can change the image to the ones I have in my post, that are the right images. Or we can leave them there for a bit so our programmer can take a look at this.

You, my friend, have earned some pie and an apple for finding a glitch!

I think you might have found a cool bug.

Where did the pictures come from?   Are they uploaded somewhere?

It looks like he uploaded them at Backyard Aquaponics.com http://backyardaquaponics.com/forum/download/file.php?id=91107 and http://backyardaquaponics.com/forum/download/file.php?id=91105.

And, I think we had a new forum development meant to speed up the forum by making images load faster so google likes us more. And something went seriously wonky.

His images now have the URL of https://permies.com/i/1299530/file.jpg. The I stands for image, and the number  1299530 stands for his post: https://permies.com/t/163946/Gettin-aquaponics#1299530. Basically, our forum software tried to cache and make a smaller image of his images....and it resulted in those weird images. Oddly enough, it didn't generate the same weird images on my post...but removed my captions.

I noticed the new image generation start occurring last week or so, when I was making all of the wiki threads and my lovely header images kept changing size.

It's doing similarly to you. The "right" pictures aren't mine. Also it's the same picture twice. Mine are under 900 x 900 px and less than 2MB each. They're attached to a post on backyardaquaponics.com.

Can you upload them to this thread so we can see them?

This is the best code mistery we've had in ages.   Thanks for finding it.

Oh WEIRD, you're right. When I posted your pictures, I'm nearly postive I did two different pictures. But now they look the same.

Let's see if I just try to do the one that didn't get posted:

I think it's a forum bug. I wonder if I can evade it by posting the images as a staff comment so they're easy to see here in the thread....
Staff note (Nicole Alderman) :

Let's see if this works!

Staff note (Nicole Alderman) :

Yep, it worked! For some reason when our forum software tries to cache or resize or something the images, it snags the wrong ones from Backyard Aquaponics...I think...

Here they are remote linked, but from my photos thread here on permies:

And I'll attach them to this post. That'll show up below, I guess.

Looks fine to me. Does that tell you anything useful?

It could be just us, or it could be something in the way the other sight is talking to ours.

We have issues with Facebook images from time to time.

I went ahead and put a staff note on your post in the other thread, with the correct images.

If anyone else reports this sort of thing happening, please post about it here!

Saw the same image as thumbnails in similar threads at the bottom of the page. Doesn't seem to fit the content in those threads either.

again - backyard aquaponics.

From my limited understanding of the internet is server bills.  Every time an image is looked at, it uses up ...whatever the word is for units of internet.  That's part of having a website, but if someone shares the photo on a different website, this also uses up units of internet.  So some sites (facebook, I'm looking at you) will do crazy things to make it harder to share the photos outside their website.

In this case, I think the images are gone.  When I press random buttons, it tells me that one of the images is http://www.backyardaquaponics.com/forum/download/file.php?id=52788

I suspect you mean bandwidth. What you're describing is what I had in mind when I questioned if the (remote) server was grumpy that I remote linked. So, new glitch aside, I'll try to remember to upload here and leave their server out of the equation. Not sure why permies messed up and applied the same code for both images, but it seems to still play nice with images from here.

Thank you!

Uploading here is probably the easiest way.

But I've sent some emails to the people who understand what code means to see if there is a fix we can do.  For example, sometimes these images are stashed on the waybackmachine.

It's great that you found the error.

here is a proper image url

http://backyardaquaponics.com/forum/images/pic-of-goat.jpg

and another

http://backyardaquaponics.com/forum/downblob/pic-of-goat.png

here is something that is definitely not an image:

http://backyardaquaponics.com/forum/download/file.php?id=91105

And if you tried to use it as an image, the results are unpredictable.

"file.php" sounds like it going to run some server software - not like it is an image.  Stuff ending in .php is stuff that will run a PHP program on the server.  PHP is a popular programming language for server stuff.

"?" says that the rest of the url is parameters to feed into the earlier mentioned server software

"id=91105" is clearly some sort of internal code that the software will understand

That's what I get when I "copy image link" on that site. Sure enough, if I'd taken the time to read the link I came up with... I didn't know the java script php(?), but I do know what a proper file extension looks like. (And what I used is not it.) Same solution, I'll upload here, where the same procedure gets me the image filepath, instead of a command intended for another program.
