Squash instead of peppers in salsa?

So it's tomato season again and we've run out of canned salsa, I don't have any peppers this year so do you think it would work replacing them with skin on summer squash? Obviously the taste would not be exactly the same but they're more for the texture than anything else, ideas? I've added cucumber before and that worked but not tried squash.
(my normal recipe is tomatoes, onions, peppers, vinegar, sugar.

PS. I'm only interested in if you think it would work from a flavour texture viewpoint not a OMG that's not been tested and and approved by the money makers at *insert jar making company here*

I think it could get you the chunky texture, and you could use powdered chili for the spice.  What might be missing is the sweetness of peppers, but you could add sweet onion or a bit of fruit like plums.

While I have not made any I have seen recipes for Squash and Zucchini Salsa, plus a variety of fruit salsa.

As MK said, it could get you the chunky texture.
