Hiraeth is the welsh word for a deep longing or wistfulness for days gone by, for your homeland. For a place from your past that may have disappeared and can’t be returned to. It is felt deep in your heart and soul. It’s a small word that encompasses so much nostalgia and deep feeling!

I had to look this word up! Thanks for broadening my vocabulary Robert.

To me it is my sisters and I all being together. Difficult as we're now spread about the world (2 in Australia, the other 3 still in UK). My Mum has a big birthday this year, but I suspect travel will still not be easy for a while yet.

I also had to look the word up because I hadn't seen Nancy's reply.

Both your reply and Nancy's reply are great.

I like this one:

Hiraeth conveys a distinct feeling of missing something irretrievably lost

https://www.bbc.com/travel/article/20210214-the-welsh-word-you-cant-translate

I am content with my life and don't feel anything is missing.

I do love learning new words.

I lost my mother-in-law back in 2003.  That word might have explained how I felt for several years after her death.

Memories of those you love stay with you forever so I have my memories of her.

Thanks Robert. I like words. I don't try to embarrass myself by using them much but I do like to know them.

Anyways, The 90's.

Well... fortunately, I have never lost my connection to the land.  I have no need to "re-wild" as my lifestyle is living deep in the woods, foraging, hunting, fishing, trapping and gardening, not buying much, no debt, nothing fancy either.  For me, I suppose it is that at age 44 I find far fewer social opportunities to meet single young women.  All I honestly ever wanted in life was a wife and kids, a family of my own.  Just one woman, for life and bound together for eternity.  She never came along.  I have been patient for the last decade or so.  But, my nature has taken me more out of mainstream society each year, and my prospects are fewer.    What is lost to me is that excitement and wonder, the joy of a new relationship with potential, the touch and feeling of desire and love.  Now, I have everything at my fingertips that I could ever want, except for the one thing I wanted most.  Life is most certainly bitter-sweet.

Think of how dumb the average person is. Mathematically, half of them are EVEN DUMBER. Smart tiny ad:
