Hey there, Im in Madison these days but I do most of my gardening in Mentone still. Is there any place to get free mulch in the area?

All I know of for free much is wood chip.  I covered over half acre with them.

Dennis,

Where can you get this free wood chip mulch? I could definitely use some for my perennial beds.

I contacted a couple local tree service groups directly.  If you ever see them in your area go talk with them.  They save money and time by having someone nearby to off load.  Chipdrop also works for some but only if they are in your area.

Welcome Josh.  I am in south Huntsville about a mile behind the Aldi's.
John.  I get wood chips and horse poo for free.  The wood chips are delivered and the horse poo I pick up with my trailer.  So far I know there is Mike (Greybeard Mike) and a Permaculture expert Allen Booker who lives in Madison and Adam who is growing all he can on his small lot and grafting onto the wild trees across from his home in Madison.
Maybe some more but not yet on Permies or not on this forum.

I’m down in Walker County. About an hour and a half south of Huntsville.

I run hair sheep and a small wagyu crossed herd.

good to hear from Jay and Eleanor.  I am developing a small orchard in south Huntsville.  Growing the easy fruit trees.  Jujube, Pawpaw, Persimmon (Asian and Hybrid American), Mulberry, Goumi and Kiwi. Around 200 trees and vines all on one acre. Doing some of the harder ones too. Asian Pear and Asian Plums.  Of course the Basics like Blueberry. Trying my luck with pineapple guava.

I am in Collinsville which is between Mentone and Huntsville. I am on the side of Sand Mountain with 76 acres and off the grid with toilets and power. We have ducks, chickens, five sheep and three goats. Working on feeding ourselves. Working on regenerative, sustainable, permaculture ideals. My husband builds chairs without electricity, Windsor Rockers. I am a family country doc who does home visits.

I’m in the Pell City area, just east of Birmingham. Growing fruit, vegetables, chickens, rabbits, few steers each year and working to add pigs and a duel purpose cow. We have had great success with finding chips by watching out for tree services working and just chatting them up. There is a place in Birmingham that gives them away but I have never had any dealings with them personally.

Hello everyone Logan here from Joppa AL. Long time permie just discovered this thread. I have 9 acres looking to homestead with all the animal and veggie bits but have to finish my house first. So cool to see that there are other permies so local.

Welcome! Everyone looking for free wood chips, just on looking for anyone working on trees alongside roadways, around residential areas and such, my husband talked to a tree company working locally but based in Birmingham and we ended up with several dump loads of chips. I am thrilled to pieces! We’ve tucked in everything in the orchard and built up the raised beds in the greenhouse as well as started a wine cap bed with them.

Hubby and I just bought some acreage outside of Arab city limits.

Looking to create a pretty low maintenance farden on part of it, and some year round raised beds for more variety.

Wow this thread really blossomed while I was sleeping. Can anyone recommend good local vendors for reasonably priced perennials, shrubs and trees? Does anybody in this thread propagate and sell?

I am building an orchard and will sell grafted and seedlings grown from cultivars. As well as  the fruit from Pawpaw, Asian Pear, Persimmon (Hybrid and Asian Astringent and non), Goumi, Jujube, Mulberry, Kiwi and hoping to grow Pineapple Guava and pomegranate. Most of this is still in the just getting started since I bought the land in late 2020.  Part of my retirement plan.

Please keep us posted on your orchard progress Dennis and let us know when you have stock to sell! Good luck!

Check your pockets for water buffalo. You might need to use this tiny ad until you locate a water buffalo:
