so i was admiring the
hugelkultur beds as they began to take shape around the future chicken/small livestock paddock shift area
and then i thought... HOW do i go about fencing the area into 4 or more paddocks with the hugelkulturs involved?
i could just build around the beds, but then i either have trouble harvesting the beds or i lose a lot of productive space, not to mention i wont be getting valuable pest control and high N fertilizer on the beds, or eggs that are blessed with the wonderful diet hte beds could provide - or meat that is likewise
i could build the
fence along the top but then, i have to figure out the fencing that runs from the top of the bed to the ground without allowing the
chickens to leave the paddock, and i have to work extra hard to make sure the sandy soil would stay put as i steepened the bed to compensate for not having access to walking along the top
but then the birds have access to at least half of the bed, leaving the other half to me and wildlife for the most part
i could build the paddocks around the beds but then the birds can jump off the top of the beds and fly off, unless i use tall fencing but thats more expensive monetarily and labor-wise
the beds range from 3-6 or 7ft tall and are probably 8ft wide or so, at least the parts that i have finished thus far - im sorta against making them too steep because of sandy soils that make that difficult and the quickness in which they dry out when steep, i might just dig keyholes to replace the steep sides
i cant really remember how big the area is in between them and they arent all in yet but i think it'll be too small for 4 or more paddocks that are properly designed, though i dont plant to make them perfect squares i still dont feel there is quite
enough space, but i could be wrong - out of town right now so measuring them will have to wait
ideas?
And if you have any opinion on which of the above three scenarios would be the best to persue and possibly find a way of working with
