I just started watching Big Timber -
Big_Timber_(TV_series) on Netflix and I’m hooked. If you haven’t watched it, it follows a saw mill on Vancouver Island, privately owned by a family. The scenery in itself is breathtaking.
I don’t normally watch ‘reality’ TV but I do like documentaries and this feels like a mix of both. I’m certainly getting an education in all things timber. I now know what yarding and bucking is. I always thought logging was a necessary evil and mostly evil. However, as I sit here, I look around and my house is full of wooden objects. Knowing a little more about where it comes from is no bad thing. My house has fake PVC boards on the outside. In the show, they have a client cladding their house in cedar boards. I know which I’d prefer. I think most permies would approve of the owners upcycling of equipment and using every part of the logs.
Other shows I’ve also found fascinating are:
Blown Away -
Blown_Away_(TV_series) all about glass blowing
Forged in Fire -
Forged_in_Fire making knives and other weapons from iron and steel - kinda wish they’d occasionally make froes, and other interesting tools.
Alone -
Alone_(TV_series) - people being dropped in the wilderness and then have to survive on their own. Lots of PEP badges! (Not so keen on some of the contestants who sport hunt animals they can’t eat and don’t eat. . . But I don’t want this to be a cider press topic . . .).
Do you find yourself watching TV and thinking, that’s a Badge Bit? Maybe I need to get out a bit more . . .
