My heifer was in heat and she had done STRANGE behavior today. She's been in heat before, but she was standing like she had to pee but nothing was coming out. She looked uncomfortable and as you can see her side hair looks ruffled. There was also some wetness that dripped all the way down to her udders, which NEVER happens. I touch her daily so I know. She is running with my young bull currently, so what do we think, guys? You think there was mating? Sorry in advance for the TMI picture. I really want to know if we might have a pregnancy.

It's really quite impossible to know if she is bred, this early. Has she been mating with the bull? Quite so, I think. If she goes a month without cycling into heat, odds are good, if she goes sixty days without a heat cycle, she's been bred. There is a blood test called BioPryn you can purchase and take a blood sample 28 days after breeding, mail it off and get results from a lab if you need to know for sure early. That is as early, that I am aware of, that a positive pregnancy can be confirmed in a bovine.

Last year I had a heifer in with my bull and it took him four of her heat cycles to finally get her bred. Sometimes a heifer/cow will get bred on the first try, sometimes it doesn't stick and take numerous attempts.

I agree with James, 100%. It does look/ sound like they've at least been... ehhh... practicing, lol. Whether it 'took' or not is anyone's guess, for now.

So, yesterday I was out with her, and she was definitely in standing heat. This morning I noticed a little blood on her vulva....I think it's safe to say she isn't bred yet. That didn't mean he isn't trying though. He has enough energy and stamina to keep up with her. I think if they are getting busy, I'm missing it. I will keep her on my calendar and check. What I'd really like to know is, if he doesn't sire her, is there a way to collect his semen and ai her with it? Because I don't just want any genetics, I want HIS genetics. Anyone know anyone or business that does that?

No way to tell if she’s pregnant from a photo, but my educated guess is that she’s lost her virginity..

Hey, all, wanted to let you know an update: this winter they really have grown, and the bull finally got enough courage to start mounting her, in my eyesight. This was happening all through January, and then February I have it marked she was in heat. March and April nothing happened. No signs of heat, no mounting. I watched them daily.

I think it's safe to say she may be bred!

To be sure, put out some dill pickles and ice cream.

(Bad joke, bad joke, I'll go stand in the corner now )

Hope everything works out well.

Hey just a quick update: she has not calved yet, but her bag is filling and two days ago I noticed some discharge. Her back pins are rounded, and now we play the waiting game.... Honestly, I'm in awe of this whole process of life. Every time a new life comes, it just reminds me what an awesome Creator we have.

I'll let you all know when the calf is here!

That feels good. Thanks. Here's a tiny ad:
