I was born and raised near Stl. My whole life I always felt like I didn't fit in. I attribute most of my passions and interests to listening to the stories my great grandmother would tell me about her growing up on the farm. For as long as I can remember I always wanted to live that life. But being stuck in the hustle and bustle of big city life stiffled my dreams. Get a job, find a husband, have some kids, pay your bills, and die is what we were taught. True to my rebellious nature I stumbled through all of that determined to get what I wanted. I found the husband, gave birth to 5 amazing boys and ended up starting my own business! Meanwhile I spent countless hours scouring this website and many others learning as much as I possibly could. I tried my best to save every penny I could, until one day I woke up and said NO MORE! I am buying something! And that is what I did! I managed to find 4 wooded acres in Tennessee and started to clear and build everything I have now. The husband came with, but decided this life wasn't for him after all. So for the last 4 years I've been going at it with just me and the kids. It is debatable if im crazy or not, but I know I'm not alone here, you're out there somewhere. Come join me! Let's finish this together. I made sure to leave some things for you to do.

The house is 12x28 mostly off grid. 1600 watt solar array with back up generator. Water is from the city, but I plan to utilize the creek again with a ram pump like I did before. I plan to do a septic but have looked into the bio-fuel septic and greatly considering that route. Currently I compost with 5 gallon buckets. Wood heat in the winter, and preciously ive not had ac but lucky you get to enjoy summers with it, because the next install is a 24v mini split! Pretty excited about that!! There is plenty of infustructure left to build in order to have goats pigs chickens and rabbits again. Possibly even a cow, or two. My plan is to be as self sufficient as possible growing our food and fodder for the animals and selling the surplus for money.

Mary;

I think what you are doing is awesome!  I hope to find my way to Tennessee someday!

I am sorry to hear about your husband; off grid is definitely something that either calls to the soul or not.

Blessings in your search and everything you are doing sounds amazing!

Have a great 2023!!
Renee

Hi . This is Tim again. Hope that All is well with you and your family. I would say pray but not sure how you would take it. At this time I'm  a Mennonite. I was horse and buggy for a time. I am Spanish. About 20 years older than you, work hard and love the lord. Before my life fell apart. I was off grid had five milk cows chickens horses goats. And  all we needed. To walk softly on the land. I  have a friend that I raised , he lives in Tennessee.  I have berries  grapes fruit trees. I have an acre and half of alfalfa. I think it be at least fun to talk to you Marry you sound real neat......tim

Thank you, but it was no great loss, there were plenty of reasons beyond just that for the split. But you are very accurate in your statement. It definitely takes a specific kind of person to live this life.

Hi Tim, I'm very sorry to hear about the loss of your wife. I couldn't imagine loosing your partner like that. As far as your response I appreciate the effort but I am looking for someone a little closer to my age.

Hi there
I’m living in Tennessee and actually looking for someone like you. I have a variety of skills. I can build almost anything. I long to get into homesteading. I don’t currently have my own land. I’ve been separated for almost 3 years and now divorced. Just rebuilding myself after a very painful marriage ending.
My favorite hobbies include hunting, fishing, softball, woodworking and dancing.

Hi Mary,

Congratulations on taking the big steps and moving forward on your dreams.  I'm considering TN and am wondering if you feel it is a good choice, and are there any areas in particular you would recommend if so.

Thanks in advance if you care to share your insights.

Gregg

Hey mary, you get the ram pump going? What's the gpm from that? I am a WELL driller by trade, and have wondered about winter time with the setup, so you going to pump to a storage/poly tank or cistern and gravity feed? And have you had the soil perc tested for a septic? Just curious. Deer season is here so I'm assuming you guys are stocking up ,canning? And do you do a winter garden?  4 acres? Is it all usable? Hey if for nothing else? I'd like to share ideas on what you got going on . Reach out sometime. DON

5 boys 😵. Sounds like you are doing some amazing things there. I was working for a company in Nashville, TN and tried closing on a place outside Wheelwright KY a few years back. I ended up with 140 acres in Northern New Mexico. But trying to meet folks who aren't all about being stoned all the time or shooting everything that moves is seeming like too much to ask for. I guess there is no in-between. I see your post is a little older but I'd like to hear about your adventures and hear how your homestead is coming along.

Hello Mary,

What you’re doing is incredible. It takes a special person for them to want to live off-grid. You’re not crazy. As the saying goes, “Trust yourself even if you don’t know yourself.” If living off-grid is what’s calling you, then do it.

At 38 years old, I have always found peace while hiking and walking along trails. Nature brings me a sense of calm and safety. Unlike cities, where the hustle and bustle of everyday life can feel overwhelming, being outdoors allows me to escape and relax. As a result, it’s easy to feel lost trying to “keep up with the Kardashians.”

Not fitting into society was a problem, but life has a funny way of working things out. I have considered living off-grid, but I’ve been too afraid to start. I would love to hear an update on your four-acre house in Tennessee.
